I have a set of good Swiss digital calipers made by TESA. Unfortunately the jaws have become quite powerful magnets. They are able to pick-up 3/16" dia by 3" steel rod.

Can I safely demagnetize them using an electrical demagnetizer without damaging the electronics?

If the construction is similar to most it should be quite easy to remove the electronics unit for safety, and also gives a chance to clean up the sensors etc. My Trojan brand (which I'm told is made by mitutoyo) got a bit twitchy and benefited a lot from careful cleaning. They get dust, swarf etc inside the slidy bit.

I have quite a powerful demagnetiser and none of the calipers that have been through its field have suffered any damage.

I first tried it with an Aldi pair before using it on better quality versions. None of my calipers show any disturbance to the display when operating in the magnetic field, (not really surprising as they work on a capacitive basis.
