Just want to check if it's just me. I have a large bore Super 7, and I'm increasingly wanting to run a higher speeds for smaller size parts. But shifting the motor-countershaft belt to the lower reduction setting is scary – the lathe seems to have much more vibration and is also much noisier when the clutch is engaged. Is this what I should expect? Obviously a higher speed will be noisier, but this is worrying!

Have you a chuck fitted? If so, remove it and try again. That will at least tell you if it is the chuck or lathe.

My old Super 7 did vibrate at high speeds but not very badly. Tomorrow I will try my lathe, a big bore Myford, at high speeds but I do not recollect any real problems. However it does not like running above 120rpm with the back gearing engaged (the lowest speed without back gearing is about 160rpm).

          I will keep you posted.

On the Super 7 I always understood that one didn't use back gear in high speed

Thanks – this is with a collet chuck.

Correct. Back gear, low gear, speed from about 26 to 158rpm.

There would be little point in using back gear in the high speed ranges. Personally I think back gear sounds noisy enough even at low speed.

I don't know if this will be of any use to you but I have checked out my lathe. It is quite a bit different from yours in as much that it has an inverter, single pulley drive to the countershaft and two pulley drive to the spindle. The ratios from the countershaft to the spindle are about 3/5 and 5/3.

When the lathe is run in low gear, without back gear engaged, there is slight vibration above about 660rpm which increases with speed but is not bad up to the maximum speed of 1050rpm. In high gear, without back gear engaged, vibration starts at about 2000rpm. Again it is not bad.

This suggests that the vibration comes from the countershaft/clutch and starts at about 1100rpm. The spindle, as one would expect, appears to be vibration free.

I hope this is of use.
