      Grinding wheels

Message for those who own and use a worden.

When dressing the wheel for the first time how far do you go? The wheel as supplied has a small radius to the outside edge should I dress this away? I have mouunted an end mill and am finding that it is not possible to get close to the centre with the grinding wheeel edge, I have dressed the wheel using the diamond point but I'm thinking I need to be brave and take some more off to produce a sharp edge to the wheel and so get a bit closer to the centre of the cutter.

What do you think? perhaps Jim Whetren is out there?

        Regards

        Deric

I face the white wheel until it has a good corner, you would not need to dress it again for a very long time. Depth of cut in half thous. only and slowly.

Most endmills lose the cutting edge off the spiral flute edge and that needs a different grinder jig to dress them up. The main thing about a Worden is the inability to adjust the height against the wheel. Jim Whetren has made an assembly to allow raising the motor and wheel vertically.

Perhaps a re-designed table might be better. A jig that can be adjusted in angle leaving the table level. Due to the design, the table will not run parallel to the face of the wheel. Being able to dress the lips of an end mill is OK but the geometry of the tool holder and blocks leaves something to be desired. You cannot for instance grind up a parting tool without lots of overhang and interference to other parts.

            Thanks for your input, Clive,

I have finished my Worden just the other day and decided to have a go at a 1/2" end mill I smashed up on a hard spot in a casting somtime ago. So I ground the end flat and square to remove the damage. I then found that I could not get enough tilt and contact with the wheel to acheive the secondary angle. I ground the secondary angles freehand then mounted the cutter back in the collet and ground the primary angles with 5deg. tilt and 1.0 deg of 'dish' angle. Because of the edge of the wheel being rounded I couldn't get too close to the centre and it left pips at the inner end of the cutting edge. So, out came the Dremel and I ground the pips away leaving a small shallow dish in the centre. The cutter had not been used much prior to the 'accident' so the spiral flute edges were still nice and sharp.

I put the cutter in the mill and hey presto it worked!! and has left a very good finish too. I was so excited the only person I could tell was my wife – she was most unimpressedsad.

Take your point about the other shortcomings and have it in hand to address the motor height issue in the near future. That's after making the 4 facet drill sharpener and having a go at the tin of blunt drills I've accumulated.

I bought the drawings and built the Worden from stock materials and raided the scrap bin. I designed the base in ACAD and then sourced and had the plate materials bent up by local fabricators for £20. So far I have spent less than £100 for the motor and grinding wheels so I haven't spent a great deal and can afford to make some accessories.

If you are interested I post some pictures but it's in pieces at the moment being painted.

            Best regards

            Deric

Hello Deric, I have a couple of Pics. of mine in my Photos if you want to look. It is a nice thing when you get a sharp edge on the tool and get a bit more life from it.

I have some 3 flute Carbide cutters that I havwe made some collets for and marked the ends with 120 deg. settings so that I sharpen them.

That seems to be the main benefit of this forum! Having someone to tell!

Hello again, Clive and Stub Mandrel,

That's a good idea about the 3 flute cutters I'll do that.

If you are interested try 'Googling' – Deric's Workshop. On there I have pictures of my Worden and some of the other stuff I'm doing. I have just built this site and would appreciate your comments – nice or otherwise! I might put some pics. like you have in my album here.

Yes, my wife can understand 'how clever that is' but can't get enthused so I'll have to share with like minded adultslaugh

                      'Evening Neil,

If you open my website down in the bottom righthand corner is a link to Weebly where you can find the place I made my website. It's free! Don't ask me what space I get I don't know and am not that computer literate, but it was easy to do and I found it intuitive to set up. I think it has it's limitations (after all it's free) but this is my second site and is plenty good enough for my needs to show off some of the hobby things I do.

                      Good luck.

                      Deric

BTW. I see that you saw Tornado where was that? Impressive isn't! one of my pictures shows it at 'full chat' after leaving exeter St. davids

                        Thanks Deric,

I saw Tornado on the Nene Valley Railway. A pleasant distraction from picking up some ebay furniture!

Hi Deric, thats a nice well laid out site and very simple to navigate. I like the pics. all nice and clear.

If your like me, you have many interests, mine is modelling and bee keeping plus a little shooting when I can. It just seems at the moment time is flying by and as I complete something there is more to do elsewhere. Plus I still work part time for the pocket money. Cant work more time as I am not giving the Tax man 40%.

Thanks for that Clive, I'll take a look.

Meanwhile I have uploaded pictures of my version of the worden. I am currently working on the 4 facet drill grinding jig and should finish it this week then I can practice on the box of blunt drills I've been carting about for ages. Lets hope it does what it says on the tin.

I will turn my attention to the height adjusting issue. I remember seeing a device for raising the motor in an old issue of MEW but at the moment I'm blowed if I can find it – it's always the way!
