Yep, with you guys with Led Zepp, Pink Floyd, Stones, Cream, Moody Blues, Joe Cocker, Hendrix, Dylan, Travelling Wilburys, whatever, 60's mix, a bit of classical thrown in, but envy you being able to belt it out as it should be – I try it and get complaints from Senior Management worrying about noise for our neighbours – they might like it as well but they aren't allowed to sample it. Mind you, they are hitting their 90's, so I suppose it's fair doo's.

First thing I did when I moved into our house was wind up the stereo and pop round the neighbours to see how loud it was in their house, luckily we have 2 ft thick stone walls between us so there was no problem , my workshop is 50m down in the garden so I can wind up the music when I want.yes

Retightened the gib strips on the milling machine. A bit of a palaver working blind under the table with ones hand in swarf.

The machine was beginning not to hold a position and a give a poor finish. The adjusting screws for the compound slide rest (that is the bit between the base and the table) certainly needed tightening. Any movement would not have been seen on the DRO which reads between the table and compound slide.

In the workshop today I replaced an ailing 5 foot fluorescent light fitting with 3 batten lamp holders fitted with 9 watt LED lamps (60 watt equivalent). Switched on and WOW, bright or what. If I do the same to the other fitting, I will probably need sunglasses.

In the man cave today making soft fluffy swarf, started cutting up timber for a bench to park a mini lathe on.

had to do the hand saw routine as my trusty 14.4v dewalt circular saw has finally given up the ghost after 15 years of service/abuse (10 of them on building sites).

so a trip to screwfix tomorrow for a cheap corded replacement and a short memorial service will be held for the dewalt.

on the music was in brum a couple of weeks ago watching The Who still ripping it up, Daltrys still got one hell of a voice

                    Hi Emgee,

Lamps are "e-luminate" 6500K daylight from Home Bargains. The model number on the packaging is

GLS B22. These are BC ends but they sell the screw ended ones as well.

I've just done a rough mental calculation. The old fluorescent was 80 watts. I'm now getting over twice the light for about one third of the electricity.

Which in relation to the Coal thread demonstrates the other part of the power generation question. If you don't use it, you don't need to generate it.

Anthony: The same rough calculation works in my home in the rooms which are totally LED lit, which is most of them. Better light from one third the electricity. I have not calculated the overall financial advantage properly, but our electricity bills after the usual dark winter here in north Scotland are noticeably lower – and that's despite the regular use of washing machine and new A-rated dish washer. I've also just bought LED lights for my "tadpole" tricycle, and cannot believe how much light I get from a couple of AAA batteries front and rear.

The only thing with LED lighting is that you loose about 70 Watts of room heating per bulb, but I think you gain on the lighting side.

To be far you get to choose if you want to turn any heating on rather than it being a side effect.

At least we are on the right side of the curve now The actual lighting is better incandescent to LED, rather than worse, incandescent to compact florescent.

Just finished the rivet squeezers, castings from Atelier.

                                  rivet squeezer.jpg

Shows the sets for 1/16" and 3/32" rivets and the D bits I made for cutting the domed recess Seems to work OK on 1/16", not totally convinced about 3/32" – I haven't yet managed a good domed head on well annealed copper but I may need to grind the set back a little.

Making them was a catalogue of disasters. Amongst which cutting the first thread in silver steel was fine – single point to 3/4 depth in the lathe and then chased with a die. The second one needed 4 attempts because the die was just tearing up the threads. Eventually changed to a new die and the result was OK but certainly not perfect. Possibly the silver steel was not annealed properly over the full length. You'll also notice the bush in the largest casting, the result of picking up the wrong drill…

                                  I'm off to Specsavers.

I had the left eye done in January … There was a 'complication' in the surgery, which meant 30mins on the table instead of the usual 10mins [if anyone needs to know the details, please feel free to send me a P.M.], but the outcome was astonishingly good.

Yesterday's work on the right eye went like clockwork, and things are looking very good this morning.
