Limited number of spotty kids with that sort of disposable dosh! In some ways similar to the threat from kites – we found out the hard way in Cyprus – flew through a kite string along Lady's Mile. Wrapped itself round the main rotor and tail rotor pitch change rods such that they went banana -shaped!!surprise Quick landing and recovered by low loader … not nice! Some protection from drones in their limited range but idiots abound and the prevalence of lasers is an equal or greater threat.

Drones – the idiots will soon leave the scene and find something else. It was the same with hang gliders and micro-lights. However until they do so ……….

Not really unusual enough for the Bodgers Lodge post but got this pump shaft in yesterday.

A bit rusty and the rusty bit is where the seal goes. Have built these up in the past as being quicker but think this one is past it seeing as it's a standard size bar at 50mm.

So saw the impellor off, bore the slug out and make a new shaft.

Also make a new threaded collar to hold the bearing, they had to split the old one to get it out the pump.

All done and dusted, just needs the bearing changing when they fit the pump back together.

CAA rules on drones (UAV) apply equally to commercial as well as "fun" activity.

Break the rules and they will go for you through the Courtsyes

Basically no different from any small R/C aircraft.

Looks like Iris would struggle to fulfill all those conditions – how do you 'keep it in view at all times' when it's following you down a skip slope?

Full regulations (they are few for models) are here

I know it's possible to cut hard steel on a bandsaw but I am curious as to how you did it (or would have done it).

My caliper knurling tool uses two 1/4" Clarkson-type broken endmills as pins retained by nuts on the 1/4 thread; my original hardened (?) silver steel items wore rapidly.

Hi everyone, this is my first post so please be gentle. First I think I should tell you all a little about myself. I'm at present living on my sailing boat in north Brazil. I will be leaving here soon heading towards the Caribbean. I spent a large part of today looking through my lockers for a small piece of ss bar I thought I had but with no luck. As I get older I find I spend lots of time looking for things. What this now means is that I am going to have to turn down a larger piece to make a pin to fit the tiller for the electronic self steering. Last time I turned some 316ss it took forever as I had to keep stopping to let it cool down. I have a Axminster C1 lathe that I can use in the cockpit this has no coolant so I can only use a cutting fluid applied with a small brush. On top of this it keeps raining here so the lathe is in and out of the cockpit like a fiddlers elbow. I think it is time for a beer!

No special secret, it's not super-de-dooper tool steel, just a decent medium-high carbon steel that hasn't picked up nicks or scratched in many years of being on my bits a shelf. I could see it was not mild steel by the bushy sparks and rapid heating when I was linishing it.

I used bronze pins on my caliper tool, I haven't checked them but its about 15 years old and still works (although I don't use it a lot).

Thank you. My hard HSS knurl on hard HSS pin is theoretically wrong I believe and I anoint generously with moly grease. When and if my pins need replacement I will certainly consider bronze – better "tribologically" but presumably less resistant to shear.

I spent some time restoring the BSA seat with a new cover, thankfully the seat base is the original genuine BSA item which I have blasted and painted. I also found time to strip and inspect the notoriously troublesome Mazak bodied BSA gear type oil pump. The drive spindle was binding very badly, although the pump internals are in excellent condition still with minimal clearance around the gears.Oil pump.…………….The spindle body was reamed while clamped to the mill table to ensure the bore remained square to the base.Oil pump spindle housing.……………….These are the original scavenge gears from the bottom of the pump. One of them was found to be faulty, its teeth had been machined eccentrically to its bore, which caused a tight spot as they rotated. Both were replaced with a perfect set from another old used pump.Pump repaired.……………….The oil pump back in place.BSA engine.…………………..An oil pressure gauge was added to keep an eye on things. New genuine Lucas direction indicators have also been fitted. A previous owner had already fitted the later type switch gear which includes an indicator switch, these were fitted to BSA and triumph bikes from 1971 following their total revamp of their whole rolling chassis and all cycle parts.image.jpg………………..Although my model engineering activities have been sidelined for a while, it is my model engineering workshop that is being used to do all the work.image.jpg

Yes, it is quite similar to the A65 seat with its hump. A new non genuine seat for the Starfire is a whopping £200. The new seat cover was just £25 and its quality is better than the price suggests.

I view these drones with dismay.

Andrew – if you are lurking – what is the view of these in the gliding / light aviation community? As far as I can see there is no control over their use and the prospect of a collision with one doesn't bear thinking about.

                                      Norman

Oddly enough there doesn't seem to have been much discussion. Indeed a search for 'drones' on the BGA website didn't produce any results. However, the CAA is well aware of the issues and is actively involved, so I suspect the BGA/LAA are just keeping an eye on the situation. In theory I think that drones are limited to 400ft, and strictly we're not supposed to be below 500ft except when taking off and landing. In practise of course it doesn't work quite like that, and certainly doesn't take into account hill soaring, when you may be below the level of the hill.

On a personal level I am very nervous about the prospect of Amazon and the like using drones for delivery. I don't like the idea of some pretty heavy drones flying overhead willy-nilly. Apart from the practical difficulties of actually delivering to the front door there are some more important issues. One major question is how will the companies concerned deal with the situation when a drone kills somebody? And that's when not if; could be an engine failure, it looses grip on the package, or flys up to the front door and clobbers somebody standing there.

You can also bet your bottom dollar that the drones will be spying on you, and the data sold on to other companies.

                                      Andrew

Amazon deliveries just a pipe dream to sucker in investors maybe. Also cover for military deliveries – eg more ammo for surrounded troops.

By chance looked at the 'wanted' adverst which I normally never do an was able to send someone some info that not many people will have. Same chance happened a couple of years ago the only time I looked at the JS forum and had a rare manual that was just requested that day.

Supply ammo to troops with a current type drone, no way, as ammo is heavy. Have you ever carried 2 belts of ammo? A box of 500 rounds or so is very heavy and you need to carry 2 to be balanced.

Thats why its dumped from low flying planes.
