Hi, today, with consent from my boss, I brought home a small offcut of box section.

        cimg2061 (1024x768).jpg

After marking with a square and scriber I cut it in two across the long sides and then reduced the width of the piece I wanted, to 135mm using just one thin cutting disc (and it wasn't a new disc) The piece is destined to be part of a display stand for my Yankee 1005 drill press.

        cimg2063 (1024x768).jpg

        Regards Nick.

Scored a nice, almost unused, set of Sutton brand UNF taps and dies and holders from 1/4 to 1", at a garage sale for $25. Retail price on the net runs from $900 to $1200. Nice one! They must be made of pure gold at that price.

I passed on the mini lathe for $300 though. The old Drummond will do me.

I'm in Western Sydney where abouts are you if you don't mind me asking?

            I'm in sunny (usually) Adelaide.

Today was flying model aeroplanes. Tried one of the venturies on my motor and it worked well. Had a good couple of flights.

Now to watch the All Blacks vs Wallabies

            cheers

Finished off my changewheel to belt drive conversion ( JS design) on my lathe. Well worth it for the noise reduction.

Not today Actually but a couple of days ago. A couple of years back I bought a cheap 80mm 3 jaw self centring chuck at the 1000 engine rally in Cheshire, thinking it would come in handy. It sat taking up space for a long time until i decided to make a mandrel fro it so that I could use it on my cylindrical grinder. I first of all made a mandrel to fit the nose of the Myford MG 12 and I carefully machined the register to fit the chuck.Once finished I drilled the three holes for the mounting screws and fitted the chuck. I put the chuck and mandrel in the grinder and left it at that waiting for a job to come up.

A few days later I was showing somebody the grinder and I switched on the machine and ran the work motor and I could see something was badly wrong with the set up because the chuck was visibly wobbling. I checked the mandrel and I thought that this was causing the trouble so I thought I would make another but before I did so I put a piece of 1" steel in the chuck on the lathe and ran a cut to true it up. I then clamped the three jaw to the steel and imagine my surprise when I saw this.

It just goes to show that cheap tools aren't always a good buy. I have since ordered a new Pratt Burnerd Precision chuck and a cheaper 4 jaw chuck that I will make new mandrels for so that I can use them on the grinder.

In another thread last week the question of stopping the two outer parts of a 3 point bender moving in the vice, I had a need to bend some 3mm steel today and simply used a Vee block and bit of bar in the mill vice to do the job. Turned out quite a good way to do it, the hard Vee block does leave a slight mark so if the surface matters or you have a lot to do worth making on block from aluminium or hardwood.

Saves a bit of optical train hanging off the back of a 12" SCT (might even pass between the forks now wink )

There was an interesting photo in ME probably in the 90s, I think it was the editor that used a V block in the vice for bending something, and ended up splitting the V block.

Bruce its going to be a 2/3rd scale model of the Tidman organ engine that is currently being covered in the mag. Will be a full write up and drawings, probably early next year for those that can't fit a 12" flywheel on their machine, the 8" on this will fit a lot of peoples lathes or it could be done at 1/2 or 1/3rd scale.

Interesting idea. I'm surprised that a servo motor system can get accurate enough feedback from the sensors.

This is interesting – all made with a mini-lathe and benchtop mill. May have a go at a fabricated one myself.

My plan is to go for autoguiding, made the second gearbox, but now I need to decide on the electronics.

This is interesting – all made with a mini-lathe and benchtop mill.

                                                    .

Indeed it is … and good to see some reasonably large wormwheels on it.
