That's a good point. I suspect here's more likelihood of a good transition if you have a fairly recent machine so that the chipset and peripherals are current or at least still considered worth supporting (by MS and their partners in this endeavor). Your setup sounds reasonably new if you are running CS5 with a hot graphics card and a decent amount of RAM. My main (own) machines are fairly new (2-3 years old tops) so may work out OK.

Not holding my breath in terms of the MS browsers etc. I'll be sticking with Chrome etc no matter what…

Did the W10 install. It took a long time but went well. I had to do a factory reset twice during the W8.1 install on this 7 year old machine, so I was pleased it went ok this time around.

I had to manually start the update for the video controller as that device had a driver problem, but Windows found one ok, so that was fixed easily.

I had to reinstall a couple of programs, to reregister their dlls etc.

Its basically virtually all the old stuff dressed up differently. So, once more, I am going to have to learn where everything is again. What a pain.

All in all, not a bad install experience at all.

Did the upgrade from 7 to 10 a few days ago and so far most things work and are fine, however Microsoft have stopped supporting silverlight so now if you want to use nowtv or eurosport player (bike racing) then you'll need firefox as edge and chrome don't support it, so that's another £12 month saved!

Hi, today I finished making a special backplate four my Boxford lathe **LINK** This was to hold a small four jaw chuck to hold this broken table adjusting screw from my Yankee bench drill.

            cimg2042 (768x1024).jpg

            Yankee Drill Press 1005

The first stage of facing off the broken end and drilling a 4mm hole 20mm deep was achieved with success using my completed special backplate.

            cimg2059 (1024x768).jpg

This backplate may seem to be a bit OTT, but I have no other way of holding the adjusting screw true without risking unrepairable damage to it.

            Regards Nick.

Thanks for the warnings about Win10. I am just in the process of loading software on to three computers I have bought with a Lottery grant for a local charitable effort. Both came with Win8.1, and thanks to the above comments they will stay that way, despite the bull++++ from Microsoft. Likewise my own PC, which is only three months old.

It took 55 mins to load and 25 to get through all the Microsoft security settings. They really want to know who you are!

Bluntly, all in all I am going back to Win 7. Any comments?

I've ended up with Windows 10 on my laptop – it kills the "sleep" and "hibernate" on Dell and HP laptops, including mine. Managed to get "sleep" fixed, but not "hibernate".

Win 8.1 was the last chargeable upgrade, going forward Windows will just follow a rolling upgrade programme that's free at the point of upgrade. However, expect more ads, expect a lot of pay as go go services (Microsoft Office badged as 365 has been sold on a rental basis for maybe five years now). As you've found out Clive, MS seem to be very determined to follow the Google model of grabbing every morsel of personal data they can.

Read Google's Privacy statement to see just how intrusive they are. Even talks about capturing telephone numbers dialled, when and for how long. They already use 'private' eMail content to drive context sensitive advertising.

As for Win 7, suspect it's out of support soon, so they will be no where else to go except Linux?

While mowing the cricket field saw an ambulace go by, then a little later the air ambulance landed on the village green. Last week it actually landed on the cricket field so we did wonder if it was going to again, A good idea to get past traffic jams but has trouble with wind. Last week the child's parents got to the hospital by ordinary car faster than the patient by chopper.
Fergie gearbox is playing up and mower starting cord broke and is not easy to replace. more work sigh.

Did manage to mill out 20 pockets, fill with brass puck, re-engrave date on some medallions in only half an hour each. The forgery is hardly visible. Then was told the things only cost a few quid each so may suggest they just donate the remaining spares to my casting reserves.

                    Win 10??? Upgrade, me???

As a died-in- the- wool conspiracy theorist, not a chance!!! Microsoft FREE anything?? an oxymoron if ever there was one!! Foolishly moved from XP to W7 for no benefit that I could see and for a lack of drivers for some common-or-garden accessories. As for Apple and its much vaunted invulnerability and reliability – just google Apple problems … and count the pages!! Once MS manage to make W7 unusable (and I reckon they will), it will be back to Linux.

Bear in mind they will often do a lot to stabilise the patient before taking off and will be tending to the patient in flight.

Just disable updates on W7 and it should stay the same as today. The only problem is that new versions of software that you may want might not work with W7.

Why wait before going back to Linux? Try installing Linux Mint 17.1 as dual boot alongside your W7 and enjoy the advantages. Most windows software runs well under Wine on Linux however I keep W7 for certain software such as Fusion 360.

Microsoft may never release another version of windows – just rolling update of W10, at least until 128-bit or quantum processors come along!

I think we will al have to change to it in the end.

Yesterday I posted about WIN 10, today I deleted it!

Easy enough if you want to get rid of it, it holds your old configuration for 30 days. After 30 days it gets deleted automatically!. They, thinking that you like WIN 10 and want to stay with it!

If you want to delete it, click start>settings>click on update and security.

Select Recovery in the left panel.

In main panel select the WIN 7 or 8 as desired that you had before. Answer some silly questions and click on get started. Sit back and wait and all will be well, hopefully.

DIY job, as far as I know: The connectors are awful, I have one somewhere, if I find it I will destroy it before it can cause further grief. A proper connector or hard wired connection are essential.

I now Starrett and Mitutoyo make proper RS232 calipers, but I would be surprised if the cheap ones really are RS232.

Hi, this evening I made a new part to fit the table adjusting screw for my Yankee 1005 bench drill. It has been made with a piece of silver steel.

                                    s1030710 (1024x768).jpg

The new part has also been Loctited into 4mm hole drilled into the end of the screw thread, note one of three grooves cut into the pin to allow the air to escape without forcing all the Loctite out of the joint.

                                    s1030712 (1024x768).jpg

Tomorrow evening when the Loctite should have had plenty of time to be fully cured, I will turn it to finish size.

                                    Regards Nick.

Does anyone use Hiduminium ? I have just made a 4 spacers for the mounting of the disc brakes on a GT 40 car and found it quite hard/tough to drill and turn.

I am interested in this type of alloy for other work.

I know they make bicycle frames and handle bar mounts from it.

Late this afternoon, took delivery of one of those 1 ton crane things. The house rebuild is making good progress and the new workshop now has a lid and is watertight!!smiley That being so, I realised that I wouldn't be able to do all the lifting and moving (back and knees and Anno Domini) so thought a crane would be just the job. … Anyone see the snag in this??

Yep, that's it – the &%$**$£ crane is TOO HEAVY for me to lift on my own!!!blush Just managed to end-over-end it into the car and got to the house before the builders packed up and they moved it under cover.

Hiduminium applys to a family of aluminium alloys developed by/for Rolls Royce, the conrods for my original Triumph Trident are made from RR56 which was optmised as a high strength forging alloy. they must be pretty strong as they raced with standard rods and one occasion was documented where the engine was gunned to 10,000rpm to win a race, normal red line was 7,250rpm.
