What change gears are these

Hello all,

I have been lurking around this fascinating site for a while and would like to introduce myself(couldn't see a special place to do it) . I have launched myself into the world of metal spinning. I have bought a dodgy Myford Super 7 and a small chinese mill came with it. I wanted a better mill so tracked down a one owner from new Tom Senior E type and the chap also had a one owner from new Harrison M250 Imperial so it would have been rude not to help relieve him of it I now seem to be inuundated with machinery.

My question however is I thought the somewhat rare changewheels that came with it did not look right. Can someone identify them? 46,44,40,36,32 2off, 24, 14.15mm dia internal. I suspect they may be boxford as he briefly had a boxford and didn't like it.

A little more information would help us.

First of all, do they all mesh one to the other? Assuming they do, what is the outside diameter of the 46 T wheel?

I can't be sure, but do they all have a keyway and what width is that? Most of them seem to be the same width, what is that value please? The one extreme right [the 24 T gear?] looks thinner than the others so what width is that please?

Hi Alan,

My Boxford gears are 18DP with a 9/16 inch bore.

My 40T gear is 2.337 inch dia.

They do look like BOXFORD, but not change wheels. I reckon they come from the Norton Change gearbox on the Boxford AUD etc.

Yes they do Assuming they do, what is the outside diameter of the 46 T wheel? 2.667 inch

Do they all have a keyway and what width is that? 0.162 inch

Most of them seem to be the same width, what is that value please? yes 0.3740 inch.

The one extreme right [the 24 T gear?] looks thinner than the others so what width is that please? Optical illusion they are all same thinckness teeth type and centre hole keyway are identical.

My 40T measures 2.3265 I believe the bores are 9/16"

Hello Alan,

Thanks for the measurements.

These are all 18 DP wheels, thickness is 3/8 inch and the keyways will be a nominal 5/32 inch

The bores you say are 9/16 inches Your 40 T wheel is also 18 DP . The rule is (N+2)/DP = Diameter in inches

We can rule out Myford and Holbrook wheels, they are 20 DP. South Bend and Boxford are I believe 18 DP [someone confirm please]

Thus far it seems Saxalby has pinned them down for you.

Yes they sound like Boxford Bud/CUD lathe wheels but perhaps after-market as the old ones above 2.5 in have the cast in thinning.

Hi Bazyle,

My Boxford gears (supplied by Boxford) are plain as per Alans picture. Only the large 100/127 pair have cast in thinning.

Thanks Chaps,

I shall sell them accordingly and put that money towards a solution for Metric changewheels I need for the Harrison M250. I have the original Harrison Order document from May 1984 and a set of 11 changewheels to cut 0.4mm-8mm was £101 +vat as an option, If only someone bought a few sets they could have made a killing.
