Unusual Dies

Gordon, that depends on the make! I have a Marshal & Rose upright that I have carried with a mate but we could only just about walk with it after two more big lads helped pick it up and then we needed help to put it back down after going through a corridor.

Mark, well mine was an iron framed one, but it was a long time ago when I was fitter than I am now. Loaded onto a trailer and towed 200 miles behind a 2CV. A bit off topic I suppose.

It's an ordinary upright so we should be OK. It's not been tuned for a few years so knocking it about a bit won't do any harm

Hi Neil, my younger brother and myself moved a couple, lifted them onto a transit truck, but that was 15-20 year ago when I was just into my 40's something. It is doable with two, but easyer with three.

Back to the subject… I got one of these dies in a job lot, exactly the same as the die on the left of the picture, except that somebody had scratched "3/32 W" on the face.

Indeed, a 3/32" Whitworth screw will run into it, so the thread has 48TPI, but I'm not sure about the thread form. It seems to rub at the top of the threads.

Maybe a 48TPI with a 60 degree thread form.

Assuming that your check and this page are both correct … That means they are not for bicycle spokes, which are 56tpi regardless of gauge.

Edit: But this says otherwise !!
