A photo would help, as I don’t recognise your description of the bottom bearing. If as you say “they” don’t make them anymore, then it won’t be possible to get a new bearing. What puzzles me is that you must know the bearing designation, as you have found they are unavailable new. There are quite a few companies that specialise in obsolete bearings, so I suggest you trawl through obsolete bearings on the net.

P.S. It just struck me, do you mean the bottom bearing is a double row type?

Measure the bearing and order a new one. OD x ID x width. The above messages give clues. Noel.

Most machine manufacturers would have ‘usually’ engineered and designed around the use an off the shelf bearing for the inside bore and outside diameter.  It’s still seems to be growing issue in some cases like Phillip’s where there just not being manufactured anymore. There’s still a surprising amount of of new / old stock bearings around as Andrew mentioned though.

I’d start with putting some time in and running searches using the bearing number code and you may just get lucky. If your not, then your going to have to get creative and re engineer the original design to use something that can be found today.

However, I got curious about your Elliott pillar / dill press and found this video that might be of some help? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpGharWWOjY&t=14s That video is from last year and at least at that point he was able to buy replacement bearings. The full list of bearing numbers is in the video description.

One observation on the youtube video. They packed far too much grease into the bearings.

My thought as well Robert. Completely full of grease at least with machine tools isn’t the best idea. He did mention towards the end of the video the head was warm but not how quickly it did so. That might have been the cause? Warm is fine, but I would have run it at the highest rpm for at least a 1/2 hr. to be sure.
