I’m building a Stuart Beam which I bought with the optional governor set. The governor set drawings assume that it is to be added to an existing construction and involves modifying the cam by removing the boss. This seems unnecessary for a new kit because you can move the pedestal and lengthen the camshaft to compensate. I also don’t like the idea of drilling and tapping for the grub screws in the centre of the pulley vee, and especially in the eccentric bearing surface. So I have a couple of options: make both components separately with bosses for grub screws, move the pedestal and extend the shaft or – machine the pulley and eccentric in one piece with a single grub screw. My question for the experts is: if I machine it in one piece, do I use cast iron as supplied for the pulley or mild steel as supplied for the cam. Any advice gratefully received.

Probably makes little difference to the pulley but the cast eccentric strap will be better running on steel so I would opt for steel.

It may be possible to have the pulley with a larger bore that can be slipped over the eccentrics boss once it has been adjusted for correct timing and a small csk screw used to hold it to the side of the eccentric this saving the need to extend the crankshaft

Thanks for the advice, I’ve decided to machine the whole thing as one piece – eccentric strap, pulley and boss, hopefully this will work.
