Emco SL1000 lathe/drill/mill

Andy who is a volunteer and a member of the associated model club at the museum bought a tiny lathe with lots of extras from an old friend and Mike and myself have been getting it ready for the model club to have in their new workshop on the mezzanine. The early Emco has the vertical column extra to convert it for milling and drilling together with lots of tooling. A three jaw chuck plus two drill type chucks and dead and live centres and faceplate and a fixed steady also an indexing attachment. The power comes in through the emergency stop, then to the no-volt switch, the speed control and finally to the 90W motor. I made a clip on belt guard last saturday.

Is this one of those “Spot the difference” quizzes?

Looks like he/they picked up a pretty comprehensive set up there.  I hope the model club members derive a great deal of pleasure from using its many functions.

I’m sure the model club will want to make lots of tiny bits. The spindle alignment was tested with 3″ of 1/2″ brass and I decided to call it a day when the difference between close to the chuck and 40mm out was only 1 micron. The chucks have the usual drawbacks, the large one has 200 micron runout at 100mm from the chuck generally, and the smaller drill type chucks vary from very good at some diameters to poor at other diameters with different sizes of drill blanks.

Now I understand the spot the difference, I had taken another photo at an angle and had difficulty getting them both on and did not notice the clone.

how on earth do you measure to one micron?

I used a Mitutoyo micrometer, not digital but a manual. It does take experience to get a repeatable “feel”. I sold all my digitals, I was not using them much after retiring and mostly use digital calipers, good for 10 microns if used carefully.
