Question – WM250 Topslide

Hello again fellow members

Well my QCTP from createtool.com arrived this week and it looks like a nice bit of kit:

I need to remove the existing stud so I can fit the new stud that I still need to make. Is this a interference fit? Any WM250 owners care to share how they removed theirs?

Once I have this information I will go ahead and bore the main body of the new QCTP from 20mm to 22mm to fit the topside.  I assume I won't have a problem boring into what looks like a hardened surface of the body?

I will then cut a thread into the existing shoulder that the current stud is in and turn a new stud with 22mm body and M10 thread at both ends for fitting into the newly made thread on the topslide. The new QCTP can then be slid on and fixed into position. Will Bright Mild Steel (BMS) be good enough for the new stud or should I use stainless?

As I don't have a mill this seems the best solution, but please do pass on your valued comments on this matter.

Have you tried the new toolpost in place with a holder for height?

I have a Myford size Dixon type on mine and haven't modified the topslide. Instead, I made a ring to go around the existing boss(to give the QCTP a bit more mounting area) and a stepped nut to use the existing stud that centres the post. This means I can still use the original 4way post for things like my large parting tool and and the knurling tool.

Hi, the stud just needs tapping with a mallet and it will come out with the pin, which is there to stop it turning. I kept the existing stud and made a sleeve that screwed on over it with the new larger outside diameter and top thread. In fact it was the stud supplied with the toolpost that I drilled and tapped. Then as you plan to, I bored the toolpost to fit that existing boss

Hi Grant,

If you look in the images I have on this site and go to the folder marked 'Misc' you will see a series of photos of me doing a similar exercise as you are planning.

I think I used EN24 for the toolpost stud.

I machined the boss on my 280 down rather than boring out the hardened toolpost, also made a spacer plate to raise it up a bit like Nicholas

I pressed mine out, machined a new one from solid bar…..

Works a treat.

I have the WM250V-F; I replaced mine with a Dickson type tool post; I machined the boss off the top slide & pressed out the old stud, machined a new one to fit the Dickson type out of a piece of solid, which I understood to be EN3 & refitted a anti-rotation pin. I have kept the old 4 way tool post for future use & if I do need it for whatever all I need to do is machine a new dummy boss.

Wow! Thanks a lot fella's for the options and suggestions. I have no way of machining the boss off of my topslide so unfortunately that is not a option for me.

I do like the sleeve idea, I could turn a sleeve to fit over the existing stud with inner and outer threads on the top so it tightens onto the stud.

Thanks for pointing me to your pictures Nick, noticed you're using a Tangential Tool, whats your opinion on it?  Pity my lathe does not have a T-Slotted topslide, life would be so much easier. 

A big thanks once again, I will keep this thread updated with my progress!

Just need to complete my tool height gauge then will crack on with this little project.

Best accolade I can give it is. – If something unfortunate were to happen to it I would replace it.!

However I am a total dunderhead when it comes to tool grinding to its a lifesaver for me.
