I'm based near Cambridge. As work (cabinetmaker) is slack at the moment I have decided to bring forward my retirement project, get back to my roots (I read engineering at uni) and make some swarf. I think my main activities are going to be stationary steam, and clocks, but I may try a traction engine at some point. I've got a Stuart D10 that I started a couple of decades ago, so that's going to be project number 1.

Welcome Nick, you will find lots to interest you here and you may even get a commission to make a clock case!

The D10 should be an excellent project to finish.

Nick: Welcome to the forum. Naturally I'd say ditch the stationary stuff and go straight for the traction engine. You must have done a different course to me at university. Not a machine tool in sight on my course.

Finish the D10 – it's a big morale booster to finish a project and it will help you gain the confidence to tackle a larger project.

Andrew, no, I didn't get much practical stuff on my course either, but I did work in a hydraulic components factory every vac, and picked up enough there to have some idea about lathe- and mill- work.

You have just missed the Spalding M E Show, last w/e. Lots of clubs and traders from all over, there, (including my Peterborough Society)

I'm not actually retiring just yet (and don't know if I will ever be able to afford to do that), just starting to do those things I've always promised myself I would, should I ever do so.
