I'm based near Cambridge. As work (cabinetmaker) is slack at the moment I have decided to bring forward my retirement project, get back to my roots (I read engineering at uni) and make some swarf. I think my main activities are going to be stationary steam, and clocks, but I may try a traction engine at some point. I've got a Stuart D10 that I started a couple of decades ago, so that's going to be project number 1.

Welcome Nick, you will find lots to interest you here and you may even get a commission to make a clock case!

The D10 should be an excellent project to finish.

Nick: Welcome to the forum. Naturally I'd say ditch the stationary stuff and go straight for the traction engine. You must have done a different course to me at university. Not a machine tool in sight on my course.

I'm also near Cambridge – between Cambridge and Cambourne. PM me if you'd like to meet up.

Finish the D10 – it's a big morale booster to finish a project and it will help you gain the confidence to tackle a larger project.

Hi Nick, I'm also in your area – between Cambridge and St Neots. And I owe Andrew Johnston a return meet! Andrew I did finally finish the workshop build and can't believe a year has passed, very poor of me. Will PM you.

Thank you gents for the welcome.

It would be good to meet up, but I have a very busy month coming up so maybe later?

Andrew, no, I didn't get much practical stuff on my course either, but I did work in a hydraulic components factory every vac, and picked up enough there to have some idea about lathe- and mill- work.

                    Welcome!

Since you are near to Cambridge, do join the Society. Am sure that will be welcomed and given any help or advice that you request. (Can give you a contact name if you want – if so PM me)

You have just missed the Spalding M E Show, last w/e. Lots of clubs and traders from all over, there, (including my Peterborough Society)

Enjoy your retirement (longest holiday of your life) and your hobby!

I'm not actually retiring just yet (and don't know if I will ever be able to afford to do that), just starting to do those things I've always promised myself I would, should I ever do so.
