I have had several calls claiming my Amazon account has a very large order placed and also My Prime subscription has been renewed etc.For a start, Amazon do not have my phone number and it is Ex Directory anyway. Do not have Prime either.

Scam number starts 00164 which apparently is well known.

That scam is pretty well known too. I watched a youtube video the other day on the subject. It was a guy who hacked into there system. They reckon the bulk of call centres doing it are in India somewhere & most of the people they target are older folk.

The whole thing is ridiculous & you would thing there would be a governing body to find them.

          Steve.

This scam has been around for a long time. I get at least two of the "Amazon" calls every single day.

Beginning to think if they stopped I might miss them!!

Some of these scams SEEM to be UK numbers, but not the ones with two Zeros before the area code digits.

After a few weeks of not "Pressing 1 to discuss with a manager" the pseudo Amazons seem to have given up.

Lets hope it continues. But not optimistic, they'll think of some other way to try get our cash. So we just need to find other ways of wasting their time and annoying them.

For a while there have been no E mails supposedly from friends and contacts, who have apparently moved to Russia, France or Germany, even the dead ones!

Caller ID's in Canada are routinely faked (100%) by Spam/Scam callers. Often, they'll use the same Area Code and Local Exchange Code as the party they are calling …. presumably to make it look like a local call from an acquaintance or relative.

I would estimate that 90% of my incoming calls are spam/scam. All actually illegal in Canada of course. Of those the vast majority originate in India/Pakistan which countries seem unwilling or unable to police it.

I still think the best thing for me would be for the phone company to allow their customer (who's footing the bill) to choose which countries they will accept calls from … the phone company's computer does know where each call actually comes from – regardless of Caller-ID spoofing.

I've mentioned it before, but in case anyone missed it… After hanging up on a scam call, you can add the number to a personal blacklist by dialling 1572, then 1, then 1. This works on all BT lines, Plusnet (who are basically BT) and probably any other provider who uses the BT infrastructure. Admittedly, you are blocking a fake number, but it could help – seems to have got rid of the Amazon calls for me. Maybe other countries have a similar system.

They just keep changing the number so call blocking doesn't work. I just ignore any unknown numbers and listen to see if it is a genuine call if they try to leave a message. The scammers don't wait for the tone but hang up as soon as they hear the recorded message.

The calls are automated, you only get to talk to a person if you press '1'. The autocaller is smart enough to hang up immediately if you pick up the phone but don't say anything.

I became so angry at them last week after being harassed now for several weeks by the same caller/number claiming I registered at “Lux Investment” and wanting further details from me that I named them everything I could think of in my not so good English. That made them angry and threatened to sue, to which I replied that I am waiting for it. After that almost continues calling from first a English 0044 number, after blocking that it changed to Italian 0039 and then to Polish 0048. The result is that I now have blocked all incoming international 00 numbers, hopefully they will now give up and normality can return in the near future. Niko.

I'll add to this by saying do not ever press 1 . It is likely to connect you to a premium rate number at £20 a min.
