I’ve been lurking for a while, but hadn’t come across this forum up until now…
I’m Tim, originally British but living in Germany for many years. My day job is in software, which is completely virtual, so I’ve always preferred spending my spare time doing something physical. That’s probably genetic – mechanical engineering runs in the family, and I have vague memories of being a tiny child fascinated by the oily aroma of what must have been my grandfather’s lathe.
Moving house a couple of years ago, I inherited the remains of a workshop from the former owner. Finally having the space, and to an extent the income to indulge this hobby, acted as the catalyst for building up a workshop of my own.
I’ve been fascinated by clocks since I was the annoying child who dismantled them to see if I could figure out how they work – I’m still not sure I completely understand it all, but I’ve slowly embarked on the process of building some of my own.
Of course, when I say “building clocks” what I actually mean is “spending as much time collecting, cleaning, adjusting, tweaking and generally playing with the tools involved in MAKING clocks as actually building them”. But that’s at least half the fun of all this, so I’ve decided to embrace it rather than pretend otherwise 😀
