I made one for my Pultra P type & now making one for a friend, not as sophisticated as above but does the job.IMG_2698IMG_0357-compressedIMG_0356-compressed

It’s not a matter of sophisticated, but rather a matter of use.

The difference between the traditional stady rest and the self-centering stady rest is the same as that between a four-jaw independent chuck and a self-centering chuck.

Surely you always want the steady to centre?
A 4 jaw independent chick is so you can centre an old shaped thing (massive simplification). But a steady always runs in on a surface, which if it’s irregular will it work

Dave, sorry but I didn’t understand your post very well… because of my poor English!

Can you please explain the concept in other words? Thanks Stefano

Axis height is easy, 3.5 inches.

                Yes John,

3.5 inches (88.90mm) center height from the lathe guides,

but I don’t know the transverse position (X axis) of the guides from the centerline.

This is the medium model of the mini self-centering stady rest series.

The automatic centering capacity is from 3 to 32 mm in diameter, it can be operated by a small pneumatic cylinder or manually by a radial cam lever.

This stady rest is suitable for lathes with center heights from 100 to 150 mm (4″ to 6″).                  Body dimensions: 80 x 82 x 25 mm.

                    Excellent device!

A slightly similar but simpler version made, I think, for capstan lathes, uses two bearing races on arms adjusted by simple screws, with the intervening tool also manually adjusted, on the same body. There is no wedge mechanism.

The rollers are set to follow the turned diameter, and it does need re-setting on each pass, so the tool is perhaps for lightly skimming small-diameter stock bar to a definite diameter, e.g. before screw-cutting, especially on threads with crest diameters not to stock rod sizes.

                      Nigel, thanks for your notes.

I don’t quite understand how the “two bearing races on adjusted arms” work.

However, please feel free to suggest and criticize this solution, because I have time to change and improve it.

Since I’m designing the steady rest mounting bracket on the Myford ML7 lathe,

could someone please confirm the guide lathe measurements of the enclosed sketch?

                        Thank you, Stefano.

P.S. In particular, the exact measurement of 35mm guide distance, because it will

                        center the stady rest bracket.

I’m requesting confirmation that the width of the Myfor ML7 lathe guides is 35mm.

Since the measurement is in inches, it can’t be 35, but will have decimal fractions.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

This is the selfcentering stady rest with the square support for the Myford ML7 lathe.
