I've received three PMs apparently relating to what I would have thought were not-very-interesting threads and which have seen no activity for a considerable length of time. I haven't opened the latest, but the other two didn't seem quite 'right', apart from being in broken English. The senders do not have public profiles (neither do I…), so they remain mysterious.

If one does not reply to PMs received on this forum, can merely opening them to read result in anything unwanted? Has anyone else experienced similar?

        How paranoid should one be?

I said this on the thread about updating the forum, I think a verification process would be a good idea, photo id to moderators, it would make all parts of the forum safer especially the classifieds, imo.

Maybe in my old age I've become overly suspicious, but it sounds a bit like some of the E mails I received from folk who have been dead for some time!

            My advice? DELETE and ignore.

If you have a good anti-virus, anti-malware app on your computer nothing to worry about. Just don't open any attachments or follow any links. And don't touch anything that ends in .exe with a 10 foot pole.

As for suggestions of forum verification I certainly would not be sending photo of myself or any other personal ID information to any moderator on any forum. No telling where it might end up. I think its risky enough people using their real names on forums and then putting their home town or suburb in their profile. Anyone in the world can get hold of that information, including the bad guys.

PM me the senders user name(s)

We did have it a week or so ago where someone sent about 14 PMs, If I know who they are I can delete them and that takes the messages out too.

                      Thanks.

                      Well for the curious.

One PM from over 2 years ago from guy with German e-mail address hence broken English and bad translationasking for details about a photo Kiwi posted.

One PM from about 3 months ago from guy who has entered a full postal address, signed up several years ago that looks like a genuine home in Australia and PM started with G'day. Asking about a copy of an article Kiwi mentioned he had and could PM to someone else.

One recent from a South African who had been a member for a while, reasonable address entered and asking about same pdf.

I would say they were all OK and have suggested to Kiwi a way to share the PDF without giving any of his details (advantage of waiting for new forum software).

With this forum being up in the top rankings for this type of subject if anyone around the world happens to do a google search for the items in question first results are posts on this forum so that is what has likely drawn them here if they have a problem with their similar machines.

While on the subject of PM's the change to the new software will DELETE all current PM's so if there are any contact detail etc in your in/out boxes that you may want to keep save them elsewhere before they are lost.

Very good, cut and paste doesn't work.

The only way I can see of saving an email is to take a screen dump, [FN Print Scr] on my keyboard, and paste the copy into something like Paint. You can then crop it, give it a sensible name and save it as a .JPG.

I am sure there are other ways however you cannot email a PM out of the website.

In that case can I suggest you use whatever method you would have done if you wanted to send an e-mail to that address.

For me on W10 and chrome I hold down left mouse button to highlight e-mail address, right click and choose copy then paste in my e-mail program. Same for any text in a PM.

That's how I found my way here, Google search on my lathe model number etc. Great work from the Mods though, can't be too careful these days

Cut and paste worked for me in W10/Firefox.

Thanks for the advise Jason and ega, only been using cut/copy and paste for about 10 years.

                                      Cut/Copy and Paste doesn't work Using W7/Edge.

                                      Regards Ian.

W10/Opera, made new sub-folder under 'ModelEngineer' folder called PM's, opened up individual PMs I wanted to preserve, right/click, add to Bookmarks, select PM folder, click Done.

Happy to be proven wrong, but I think all you've done there is create a link / shortcut to the webpage where the PM is. Once the forum software changes, I suspect they may disappear.

Do not think I will be proving you wrong. Further consideration confirms your point, have saved them individually as PDFs to a 'PMs' folder, at least the text will be archived.
