Then there was the old bicycle thing. Park cycle outside the model shop with pedal on the kerb, gaze in wonder at something in the shop window, turn and get back on bike – not your bike!!!. Whoops.

Now a-days the youngsters just drop their bikes on the pavement – bad for bike and bad for the elderly on foot.

I knew somebody who was half way home from the pub only for his girlfriend to complain about the furry dice hanging from the rear view mirror – drove back and collected the right car. Didn't 1970s car manufacturers understand the concept of key differs?

Forgetfulness isn't always age-related. I took the bus home from school one day only for my mum to ask where my crash helmet was. Had to take another bus back to collect my motorcycle.

Old cars that i owned had key series… FP or FS were the common one i recall and back then filling stations kept cards of the 80 keys in each series. To make life simple for thieves the series and number were stamped into the ignition lock bezel easily read through the back window with a pocket telescope.

Have just recovered my 7" RDG rule (nice clear graduations for O A P eyes) that went missing a couple of weeks ago Slipped behind a box on the bench.

A short time later, my wife found the missing (for several days ) top from the tube of Hylomar, that i taken into the kitchen. We are still wondering how it became stuck to the towel that had recently been through the washing machine.

            More of life's great mysteries

Not so much as lost and found but being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I once drive to do a job at a dairy near Bridlington only to realise on arrival that I should have been at a bakery in Plymouth.

I'm short-sighted, and getting worse with advancing age. As a result, I often find I am spending time rootling around the workbench looking for the small part or tool I just put down. Eventually I give up and go off for a cuppa. At some point, I say to the missus 'have you seen my glasses?', whereupon she replies 'Do you mean the pair on the top of your head, or your other pair?'

I returned late back to Birmingham Airport from working in Dublin and went to the Multi Storey car park unable to remember what floor my car was on, after about forty minutes of searching I was approached by airport security who asked what the problem was, I explained that I was looking for a maroon Ford Sierra Estate like that one over there which turned out to be mine.

Ha ha. There are some funny car stories in this topic.

A slightly different take on the lost car theme – a chap I worked with in the eighties told me of a 1950s pub crawl with a bunch of workmates where they were eventually so drunk that none of them could work the controls of the car so they finished the evening by taxi.

Next day nobody had the faintest recollection of where they had left the car, so they had to re-stage the pub crawl in order to find it.

Almost as bad as a colleague who was sent to do a job at Ford at Dagenham. He parked the car but had problems finding it when he had finished. What? Finding a blue Cortina in a Dagenham works car park?

I keep loosing the chuck key for the pillar drill only to realise that I brought some rare earth magnets and attached it to the pillar drill to keep the key safe.

For the part I'm making at the mo it would have been easier to use transfer punches. I spent ages searching the shed, naturally starting in my 'measuring things drawer' before finally remembering that it was an item I'd kept meaning to buy.

Today for the part i need my angle plate standards – and if I ever find them I can get on. I've searched their usual drawer and everywhere else. The only good news is that I found the transfer punches clearly labelled in their unopened box in the measuring stuff drawer…

Variation on the theme; my friend drove to a job a hundred miles or so away from home. He got back very early to his house and his girlfriend asked how come he was home so early? After a few moments of being puzzled he realised when he stopped for a coffee halfway there he got back in the car and accidently set the sat-nav to "home" rather than his destination. He then blindly followed it without thinking. I should stress at the time he was in his late twenties so you can't really blame old age!

Friend gave Me some maps for a trip. We could not find Them and plodded along with out Them resulting in a few mistakes. Came home looked every where with no success. Took 2 days to realize I put Them away where They belong thinking We would go there to get Them before We left. So much for trying to develop good habits.
