in harold's book on dividing shows how to make a lining tool.

would a boring bar in a sensitive tailstock drilling tool do job?

In principle, Yes … But whether it's practical will depend upon the size & shape of the workpiece, and how much offset you can apply to the tool.

I look at lining tools and wonder if they're worth the effort unless you expect to make a lot of dials. I would put the time into a multiple carriage-stop which is likely to be used more often.

I always do my lining on the mill and just set the table stop. Dividing head or rotary table completes the picture.

                That's clever.

Do you drag and scratch or have a very fine engraving tool spinning really fast – have wanted an excuse to buy those tiny engraving thingies.

Bill, it is done by drag and scratch. I use a piece of 1/4" diameter HSS spun to a point on the cutter grinder. I have several of these pointed items and use the for marking out on the mill with readout and sometimes to guide a tap. Chris.
