Lathe Belt

Hello everyone

new guy here with a question, I have just recently got a Drummond lathe it looks like the Drummond knee planer as its got the treadle plus the electric motor. My problem is the belt is snapped, I have another belt here but its slightly wider than the original one. Does anyone know where I could get a belt like the original one these lathes?

has flat belting for sale. You might be able to salvage teh original belt by using a joiner or by stitching it with leather thonging.

On my old electric motor driven Drummond M-type, I use a poly V belt in place of the flat belt and it works wonderfully. It is a PK7 profile belt, from memory. Not sure if they make them long enough to reach down to the old knee banger.

Show us some pics of what you have got. They are great old lathes, a lot more useful than many would think for something so old.

Hello everyone,

Not true model engineering perhaps, but I wondered if anyone knew of a design for an impulse or electromagnetic magnetiser that I could construct.

One that could be used to re-magnetise the older style motors in Hornby-Dublo locomotives.

I am aware of the new rare earth magnets available as replacements, but they seem a little too powerful and cause cogging where I have tried them previously.

You should be able to get Ferrite magnets, or there are different grades of rare earth magnets.

There was a build project in Model Engineer for a magnetiser, might have been in the 1990s.

If you get to the on line Model Engineer index, an enter Magnetiser, you will find a page full of both Magnetisers, and Demagnetisers from 1902 for the first one, the one I was thinking of was in vol 177, no 3942 A simple magnetiser by Malcolm Richards.
