Good afternoon all, I have a problem with my PC in that having reset it to an earlier time I have lost my early version of Microsoft Office. Unfortunately windows 10 will not allow me to load from my disc as the version is no longer supported. They tell me I can download windows 365 for an annual fee of around £ 60.00 which I don't really want to get into. The question is has any one on the forum any suggestions as to what I can do as I cannot writte anything or produce spread sheets or documents, any help would be much appreciated, thanks. John.

Get an Apple computer, sorry not very helpful but Microsoft was the reason that I ditched PC's and went to Apple. Trouble free for six years now.

You could download Open Office for free from its main site. **LINK**It is compatible with Excel, Word, PowerPoint et al and used to resemble Office 2003 closely. There is another, similar suite called something like Libre.

I run Microsoft 'Home Office' 2010 on a Windows 10 PC

You can buy a disk of it here **LINK** It's fine providing you don't want the latest features plus there is no ongoing annual payment.

Download Apache Open Office, it is free it can open Microsoft files and convert to Open Office format.

Hello John Weight, good afternoon.

I don't use Office from Microsoft since more than 10 years.
Instead I use LibreOffice which has all office tools I need and is highly compatible with Excel, Word and PowerPoint, at least.
The suite is also available for Mac and Linux and it is free.

Could be tricky! Two things you could try.

• Run the installer in compatibility mode.
• Investigate Microsoft Virtual PC, which is intended to keep legacy applications going. It's a virtual machine environment that allows earlier versions of Windows to be run. It may be too complicated for you because you have to install the early compatible Windows OS as well. But once that's there, you should be able to install your old Office on the Virtual machine and use it from there.

Another possibility is to switch to LibreOffice which is free from here. Although rather similar LibreOffice isn't 100% compatible with Microsoft Office. Incompatibility is most likely to be a problem if you've done any scripting or complicated formatting in Office. It will probably be fine if you just write simple documents / spreadsheets / Powerpoint etc. Not such a good idea to use LibreOffice if you share Microsoft Office documents with lots of other people.

Just be aware that there is a possibility that the free (and often excellent) software companies may at some point in the future do a Photobucket type bamboozle-hyke on you.

You can run most Microsoft Office apps free using the official "Online" versions. So no cost, no fees etc, although you need an account (eg Skype, Onedrive etc). Google Docs are very similar, if you have a particular dislike of Microsoft.

Many people are either too paranoid or self important to countenance working online but if you don't want to spend money or pay for a subscription or work online, you have to decide if you actually want to do anything in the first place.

The online versions don't have 100% of the functionality of the full Monty but few of us ever get near that level.

I'm with Samsaranda (Dave) – go Apple and ditch the hassle that is Microsoft. Changed over about 14 years ago as I was fed up with Microsoft and have never looked back, and wouldn't go back either – everything just works (well, most of the time!!). I love it. Plus the desktop Mac, laptop (MacBook), iPad and iPhone all sync together no worries, makes life just so much easier if IT is important in your life. Plus very little in the way of virus's or trojans or other rubbish as it's all targeted at Microsoft.

A friend just recently told me that if you change the extension of a .docx file to .zip you can then extract the contents into Word document text, images and other contents.

This also applies to Excel and Powerpoint documents.

I use linux mint with LibreOffice, no virus's to worry about and no licences to pay through the nose for, LibreOffice will also run well on Windows.

Good Morning all, Thank you to everyone for their very kind help and comments re my PC problem, I have taken the advice of those who recommended Libre Office and downloaded the programme, as mentioned it is very similar to Microsoft's Office and will be most suitable for my needs, again many thanks and what an amazingly helpful group of people you all are. Fair cop guv. But despite being both paranoid and self important I have thought realistically about the risks. Yahoo comes to mind, also this recent example:

And don't forget to read the small-print carefully. Twice. Three times if it's very boring.
