Great photo! Not seen it before, any more info about it?

Looks quite modern to me, the guy on the left with his safety glasses, and the other guy with his winkle picker safety shoes! laugh

Some of the people on this forum having sleepless nights over a man in his shed drilling a 3mm hole in a piece of metal would have an aneurysm if they saw what went on in that factory.

They had probably just carried out a final spring cut on a 15" gun barrel. laugh

As an apprentice on a harrison 10 lathe on a good run in free cutting metal we would have 2 others standing beside me to hold the spinning spiral – on a good day it would run to about 10 feet long before it broke.

                        Happy days ! Noel

I wonder if you can infer anything of the chip's origin from the hand of its spiral.

I am trying to visualise it. I think conventional turning on a lathe would make a right hand spiral.

What of shapers, planers and vertical lathes?

Do I detect a family resemblance? Could be father and son. The older man is dressed for forge work, so maybe the youngster produced the exceptional swarf.

There's something un-British about the cut of their clothes, especially the young man in his Tyrolean cap and short smock. My guess is they are Americans and being clean shaven suggests 1920's or 30's.

Why so unhappy? Maybe stopping for a photograph resulted in less pay because they were on piece-rates.

You never see smocks on Americans, unless they just came through immigration.

Photographs were serious things back then

The turnings might be off cuts of the tape used to wrap big gun barrels
