      Hi,

I am new to the site and the world of model engineers!

I recently inherited a project from a deceased relative and would dearly love to finish it off!

Its a 5" LBSC Pansy. From the little experience I have had with the mechanics of locomotives, the frame has been assembled, with wheels fitted, brake pads and the reverser lever has also been fitted.

I have been given some plans and a picture of the what they were going to base the completed loco on.

I am wanting to know if there is anywhere that I can get hold of parts from that need nothing more than fitting to the loco, including a step by step guide on how to do this.

I have done some research and found several engineering sites, but to be honest, I am struggling.

Is there anybody who could point me in the right direction please?

      Thanks

      Chris

Chris, I am not "into" steam railway engines however I don't think you will find ready machined parts for your engine. These projects are made by individuals who want to make the model themselves.

Only possibility s to find someone willing to machine the parts for you to drawing but beware some of the drawings can be a bit "ify" by all accounts. Also if you go this route be prepared for a hefty bill — time is money as they say.

          All the best John

            Hi Chris,

Sounds like a perfect reason to gather a workshop and complete this great loco (one of my favourite designs).

All you need is the desire to complete the loco – which you obviously have. What a lovely tribute to your family this would be.

I would say you have no chance of buying ready to fit parts……..the next option would be to have the parts machined for you (which as John says, would be VERY expensive).

Hope you decide to bite the bullet – it would be worth it .

            Regards,

            Mike.

Welcome to the forum. You will find most model engineers are very helpful and will be pleased ro guide you in our quest if you give them a chance.

So you need to find your local ME club and go along to meet them. They will probably have some people who will sell you the old Model Engineer magazines covering the series on how to build Pansy. Search for ME index and look up the date. Also if you read around this forum you will find references to several beginners books.

There is a kit built 060 around which you will find out about but do not get the idea that any of the parts for that will fit – they don't and you can't adapt them.

Finally the Pansy design is one of the best around. LBSC had got enough experience to get it perfectly balanced for easy steaming on just about any coal and inexperienced fireman. At the last ME show one exhibitor was showing his second, having foolishly sold his first he missed it so much he had to build another.

                Hi Chris,

You do not have a profile, where are you in the country because I would reccomend that you firstly join your local ME club there will be people there willing to help you. If it is the drawings that I am thinking of there a mistakes on them. Let us know where you are and any of us will be happy to point you in the correct direction. As Baz says there are a few kits aroung BUT made to the suppliers spec, and not to the original drawings. Did you inherit any tooling! Western Steam amoungst others (but be prepared for a long wait) will make the boiler for you and you can purchase a lot of the fittings "off the shelf" but there will still be a lot you will have to make for yourself. If you are anywhere near Bristol come and visit the Bristol ME exhibition this week, you are sure to find at least one finished "Pansy" there, It is in Thornbury leasure centre, just off the motorway. FREE parking, 3 halls jam packed with activity you will fing me lurking on the club stand, come and say hi.

                Bob.

Some photos of what you have might be useful, it would show how much of Pansy you have. It would be cheaper (if you want to get into model engineering)to buy a lathe and mill, that get someone to make the parts for you, if indeed you can find someone, Its the sort of thing I might do, but being 12000 miles away, its a bit far to walk. Go join your local ME club. Ian S C
