F1 shaper

My shaper has at sometime in its life been fitted with a single phase 240v motor. The two speed pulley on the motor driving on the smallest and slowest setting is still way to fast for some jobs so I need to find an EASY way to slow it down.

 

Without going through all the faf involved with buying/making another pulley is it possible to put something like this:

between the three pin plug and the motor to get the desired result?

 

The identification plate on the motor is unreadable but judging by the physical size I would guess it to be between 1 1/2 and 2 HP.

 

You will have gathered that my electro-intelligence is non existent – sorry – however, I can make a blinding fish curry.

Hi Rik,
Almost certainly no as it most likely an induction motor. The speed controller in your link will only work with a series wound motor. (Also known as a universal motor.)
I just had another look at the advert and noticed this amusing claim "reverse polarity protection" on AC.

the size of the motor will have nothing to do with the HP I have a very old 1/2 HP motor that is much bigger than a new 3 HP motor, my old shaper was well under 1 HP from what i can remember. the motor you have may be the wrong speed.

1.5 to 2 HP is way overpowered for an Alba 1A. Someone has probably just stuck on whatever motor he had, so it may well be over fast as well.

The Elliott 10M used a 3/4 HP 3-phase motor with a speed of 1000 rpm, a strange figure and impossible to match in single phase. The Alba, being a precursor of the Elliott, may have been the same.

I gave up trying to find a single phase motor and just stuck an inverter in an enclosure below the motor.

You can't go the speed control route with an old motor I am afraid Rik, it will almost certainly overheat, because slowing it down also slows down it's cooling fan. Check the rpm on the motor It should be 1440 or thereabouts, I bet it has been fitted with a 2880 from a compressor. single phase 1 1/2 to 2 hp motors will be cheaper than a VFD speed control, don't buy new, go to a motor repair and rewind shop.

They usually had a 6 pole motor on so 870 to 960 revs was normal motor speed.

My Alba 1A was fitted with a 3/4HP single phase motor from new, sorry, can't remember the RPM, it was either 960 or 1400. I suppose you know there is a 2 speed gearbox as well as the double pulley? I never used the top speed, it was fast!

I have just put a tacho on the motor spindle and it reads 1440. That's 440 to fast from what I have read on here. All remarks very helpful – thanks all and yes I do know I can select from 4 speeds. I dare not select the highest speed – I prefer the shaper to stay put in the workshop.

Finally remembered, albeit too late John S is right (of course!) mine also has a 960 rpm motor, single phase, made by SEM in Beckenham, UK (Small Electroc Motors)#

My shaper came without a motor. The manual quotes a hp rating but not a motor speed. I fitted it with a 4hp 4 pole three phase motor.
