A few posts back I did query the Black Ring on the front bearing of the Spindle.Compact 5 Black Ring

I had assumed this was a felt ring which was being retained by the Washer under the Hex Bolt head.

Was this an attempt by the previous owner to lubricate the bearings?

I did even wonder if the front shield of the bearing had been removed to allow oil to be injected into the bearing?

      Regards

      Gray,

Video sounds like bearings, but hard to tell from a video.

Try the old screwdriver trick. Put the blade of a screwdriver on the headstock next to the bearing and the handle against your ear and listen to the noise. Move the blade to different points to locate where the noise is loudest.

Yep I’ve tried the stethoscope method already. Indeed in the spindle housing I do hear a bit of whirring. I just can’t tell if it’s normal or not. I should at that below 2400 RPM the machine runs pretty silent.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>All you can do is go ahead and use the lathe as is. If the bearings are worn or damaged the noise will get worse and surface finish on your work will be poor. Then you can replace the bearings.</p>

I changed the bearings already, see my post above.

That’s weird. I did not see your very extensive post when I made my post.  This forum seems to do that sometimes.

        Anyhow, well done, problem solved.

          Gray,

I can’t tell for sure, but I would rather say it was an attempt to “protect” the bearing from any swarf or sawdust flying around. He also had some foam in some weird places, and as the lathe was very dirty (probably from sitting in a carpenter’s workshop), I assume that’s it. The front shield of the bearing was not removed.

Now that I changed the bearings (see my post above) I have also removed this felt ring as I feel it’s totally unnecessary if not counterproductive.

I realised that too, I think sometimes they land in some moderation limbo or something like that. Thanks for the kind words.

The presence of sawdust explains what has happened to the bearing. Usually some preventative measures can lead to more rapid wear.
