      Hi Andrew

That’s really interesting – thank you for digging out those 1966 drawings!

Given that I’m measuring my grub screw with a fairly basic vernier caliper, 3.2mm/3.3mm could easily be a slightly off reading for a 4BA (3.6mm).

The only other major discrepancy is that my grub screw is 3/8″ long not 1/2″. There could be several explanations for that:

      1. Maybe the vice underwent a small design change between 1966 and 1971?

      2. As the grub screw is not a component we were required to make ourselves, maybe this was the only length available “in stores” that day?

Out of interest, do those 1966 drawings give the O/D and I/D (bore) dimensions for the collar? If you could share those, I can cross-reference them against my collar to see if their was a design change.

In fact, if it is not a breach of rules for this forum. Would you be able to share those drawings with me?

Thanks for your help. This may be a breakthrough!

      Barry

        Update:

Based on Andrew Williams’ observation from an old drawing I took a chance on some 4BA x 1/2″ slot headed brass grub screws from a well known auction site. It’s the right thread and now, having cut down the length to about 3/8″ they do the job perfectly.

The restoration is complete now (see photos below). The purists among you will probably say that I shouldn’t have painted it but the 2 jaws were so pitted with rust that I thought it best to apply some Hammerite to the worst affected areas.
Anyway, thanks very much to everyone on this forum who offered advice and guidance!
        Barry

P.S. I would still love a copy of those drawings if anyone has any!

Looks like a very good job Barry. It looks like it will be a handy little vise.
