do I need reverse

I have a warco 220 at some point its had anew motor fitted and not been wired up properly if I cut threads do I need the reverse or is it OK to move the tool back manually I've had a couple of people look at the wiring but don't seem to fathem how it should work .

It depends on the pitch being cut and whether you have an indicator dial.

Hi Kevin,

In short, yes you do. Warco 220s do not have an indicator dial as the leadscrew is permanently engaged on the carriage handwheel. For all threading, the lathe must be reversed to run back. If the engagement lever is lifted, you stand no chance of picking up the thread again.

I have the wiring diagram for the lathe and it is fairly simple to arrange the motor to run in reverse if it is the same type as the original.

It is also possible to turn the chuck backwards by hand, needs must when the devil drives.

If you gave some indication of your approximate location in your profile there may be somone close enough and willing to offer to help sort out your problem. The fact that Chris has the wiring diagram should make it easier to sort out.
Are there 4 wires (Plus an earth wire) going to the motor but only two connected ? Also is there still a reversing switch on the lathe ?

Hi I don't know if the motor is the same as original but its a 3 phase wired as a single phase it has 2 capacitators its been wired as is shown in the lid and uses 2 bridges

2 of the wires from the motor have been cut off I have a diagram from a CD but not sure if its applicable to my machine and it doesn't show what wire is what and what goes to z1 z2 etc or where the caps connect

Oh it does have the panic button but no red and green button in box on the end and no micro switches it looks like 4 wires and earth coming from the forward and reverse switch

Chris if you could email your wiring diagram I could see if it makes sense to me

Hi Kevin,
Are you sure it is a 3 phase motor ? I do not beleive a 3 phase motor would have a diagram on the lid of the connection box showing how to connect it to use it from single phase. Pictures of the motor connection box, the diagram on the lid and the plate on the motor showing the ratings would help us understand the situation. I think you will need the help of someone with electrical knowlege on site to help you. Chris will need your email address to be able to send you the diagram. I would not advise you to post it on the forum. Send Chris a PM with it. Chris's diagram will not show how to mahe a 3 phase motor work from a single phase supply. If it is really a 3 phase motor and has the option of connecting it in both star and delta configuration I think fitting a VFD would be a better option.

Hi les I am only going by what I was told about the motor the plate is very difficult to see its on the inside I will try and see what it says

Hi Kevin, there is a wiring diagram for both single phase and three phase, both should have a contactor box with a start and stop button. This box should be connected in line with the forward/reverse lever. The contactor box is a NVR which will stop the lathe from restarting automatically in the event of a power failure, it can be seen in the scan below, attached to the right hand end of the splash back.

I think you'll find it's single phase, 110V/230V. My Taiwanese lathe is wired this way as a dual voltage motor, and the circuit diagram Is on the LH end of the bed, it also has the diagram of the 3 phase option.
