        Yup !

I don't feel guilty about the envy I have for immaculately clean workshops. I plan to built a separate workshop this year so the bikes can stay on the garage and the machinery can move into the new workshop. An improved cleanliness regime will also be part of the new approach

It's amazing that the workshop black holes will gobble up numerous ancient (and irreplaceable) small tools and just-completed, special-threaded bolts, etc., and yet the swarf and chips are ignored and stay around for yonks! Must be something to do with low-mass/gravity physics being selective in ME workshops!

Oh David PLEASE do not attempt to photo my workshop. My wife says it should have went down with the Titanic. She is also a member of the BSMEE.
But it has turned out 4 Loco's youngest grandson made a Sterling when 16 ( n) amount of swarf helped lots of people get items repaired that would have eaked into there pension money.

So it is nice "I suppose" to see a nice squeaky clean workshop for publicity purposes but in reality but in my humble opinion I would like to see it as he/she was makeing it.

Many years ago I worked in a process control laboratory in a chemical works where we were issued with ankle high wellies to resist the acidic damage to your own shoes. Our changing room had lockers for your own kit and we were joined one day by a particularly slobby individual who would insist on leaving his boots reeking on the floor at the end of the day.

My patience failed when dirty underwear started to join these boots and got my revenge by nailing them to the floor.

My lathe and mill beds are swept clean at the end of the day, the floor however is a different matter!!

I try to remove most of the swarf at the end of the day, floor less frequently I'm afraid.

To help keeping the milling machine table clean, I have made up a couple of boards that fit either side of the vice. A spine of 3/4 x 1/2" (to fit Tee slot) glued underneath keeps them in place. A couple of coats of varnish prevents oils soaking in.

They also help protect the table from accidents, like dropping cutters, etc.

Most, but not all swarf is excluded, and certainly makes cleaning up a lot faster and easier.

My dear wife has 5 cats who tend to think that my workshop is a giant cat lit tray, have even threated her with "I am going to turn up some steel plugs and you can guess where I am going to shove them!!!" Ah well……
Even left lots of swarf on the floor, they ignore it. Put down lit trays and food beside them they ignore them.

Had a bit of a clear up this week.

That POS Bridgy went out the door, folloed by an articulated arm drill and this waht was was left <g>

Actually looks worse than it is because all the crap goodies that was crammed neatly stacked round the drill and POS have finished up all over in this pic.

Believe it or not but there is a nearly brand new T&C grinder under that lot, the motor is just visible next to the blue bucket, under the long ball screw box.

End of that day finished up like this.

End of next day all cleared.

Ignore the lumps of wood, they are for the stove, so now got a bit of floor.

Which is a good thing because this landed on the yard today.

All thanks to Ketans fantastic magnetic pick up tool wink

The serious bit is there is only 28" access where it has to go and it weighs 1.4 tonnes so the shuffling sideways bit is out of the question.

                                    Hi Guys,

I always thought that cleaning up was the job of apprentices, sham I don't have one.

I shall relate the tale of visiting the home workshop of one of the best machinists I ever met. Now this lovely old chap was a perfectionist in every thing he did, so I was expecting an operating theatre like shop, HA! It was stuffed full of God knows what up to waist height, and I have quite a high waist. There was a narrow path left that allowed free (a relative term) passage between machines. So if it is good enough for him, who am I to say and do different? "If you want to be the best, copy the best." TFIC*

PS If you feel you need some excuse for lack of tidiness, you could always claim to have OCD and being untidy is part of the therapy, painful though it maybe!wink

                                    *(tongue firmly in cheek)

I didn't know you had been to my shop Chris ?

Part way thru crapping it all up again.

Base in, knee refitted, saddle refitted, bed ready. Got to shoot out for Mothers day, might get some done later.

I can shed some light on this thorny issue! The production team for MEW includes one Steve Stoner as 'retoucher' – it's obviously his job to photoshop out all the swarf!

Reading this topic has mad me feel guilty, so I did a little cleaning and guess what I found? My Bantam has a swarf tray under the lathe bed!
