I am looking for advice regarding the BR Std loco vacuum ejector which is fitted on the left hand side of the smoke box. The steam exhaust from the ejector is directed into the smoke box via a 90 degree elbow. Can anyone tell me where this pipe is connected to inside the smoke box, or is it just vented to inside the smoke box?

      Thanks

      Howard

          Hello Howard,

Without the benefit of a works drawing to hand, I'm certain with the BR standard single chimney locomotives a pipe was fitted inside the smokebox from the elbow and connected with the petticote casting to vent the exhaust into the chimney; on some double chimney locomotives (class 4 4-6-0s) the exhaust had it's own seperate port through the top of the chimney casting.

          Regards,

          Bob

Thanks Bob, I would have thought that it must be connected to the chimney some how and not just vented into the smokebox.

              Hi Howard,

If the ejector pipe went just into the smokebox it would destroy the smokebox vacuum.

It must go up the chimney without affecting the smokebox vacuum or the smokebox draughting and as Bob states there are various ways to achieve this.

It would be interesting to know whether your loco is the double chimney or single chimney type that Bob hints at.

The double chimney type is far better.

              Cheers,

              Julian

Thanks Julian, I am building a 71/4" 9F, double chimney version. Regards, Howard.
