      Bench grinder safety box.

I need to make a protective box for my bench grinder ,as it will be used in front of a window.

I have in mind an open front box with a top hinged lid, which is raised when using the grionder, thus protecting the window from flying debris.

I wondered if anyone has made anything along the same lines, before I proceed.

      Mike.

I’ve never had a bench grinder that needed to be housed.. ..does it not have fitted guards?

You don’t say if the working area of the wheels is towards the window or facing into the room.

Towards the window if you are between them, facing inwards if you stand facing the window when you use the grinder.

A bench grinder should not throw particles backwards. The wheels are normally guarded over something like two-thirds of their circumferences, so the particles fly forwards and mainly downwards towards the operator.

You still need eye-protection of course because they can fly upwards; but no debris should go out behind the machine.

So is this grinder properly guarded?

One of my bench grinders had chutes at the rear lower part of the wheel guards that allowed for sparks and/or grabbed parts to be ejected. I would just place a piece of MDF behind it when being used if it was a concern.

Like Pete one of mine has chute on each side. If your grinders have proper guards round the wheels then I fail to see the need for a box or extra protection ? What is special about your machine that it need such protection ?  Noel.

Yep my selecta has a chute at the rear of the wheels and just a piece of 3mm ply resting against the wall

I do not see any need for this at all. I have a grinder adjacent to a window and it does not get any debris on it. ( the window that is ) 🙂

A piece of transparent sheet, against the window, would seem to be a simple protective device.  KISS principle in operation?

Folk have mentioned chutes at the back of their grinders; are they really intended as ports for a dust extractor?

                        Mike,

I use an Ikea plastic box, not so much as a ‘safety box’, more as a dust/grit collector box.

Dust still comes out the front but it is easy to collect with a dust pan/brush.

                        grinder box 3

The Ikea box was cut in half and a couple of inches removed to reduce the width. A portion was also removed at the bottom to fit the base of the grinder. Then it was duct taped together, with a wooden stiffener in the top rim to keep the box reasonably straight and stiff.  It has been in use for a few years now…no issues.

The box only has a few inches clearance at the back but can be easily tucked down and over the grinder into position.

The 8″ grinder I have has long chutes and a trapdoor to empty at the bottom – this is a pedestal mount not bench mounted. Noel.
