I have one of the little bench 'linishers' that everyone sells, although mine is the Machine Mart version:

Despite being sold to woodworkers, these machines are excellent at removing metal with the standard emery-based belts.

BUT although I still have the original belt (now almost completely devoid of grit) the replacement belts have poorly made scarf joints. Not only is there an annoying click each time the joint goes past, they wear through really rapidly at the joint, then snap, while the rest of the belt is barely worn. I thought it was me overdoing things and jamming the belts, but a careful inspection shows it has literally worn through at the 'step'.

Has anyone else had this problem? And can anyone recommend a source of quality belts that won't do this?

      The size is 25 x 762mm / 1" x 30"

      Thanks,

      Neil

I also use MSC for belts for my 4" wide clark jobbie, the zerconium ones last quite well.

Thanks for the order numbers John – without those I doubt I could have found them 1" sanding belt gave >700 hits.

I think I've ordered 30 of one and the last 12 of the other, claims I've saved £281

But despite checking next day delivery, it says a representative will call and didn't add delivery costs. Is this normal?

I think i have that model, i couldn't buy the clarke edition from machine mart because they ran out, so i got the warco branded equivalent. Judging by the noise it makes when sanding i think mine is also wearing away at a similar joint. But it hasn't broken yet.

I've never ordered anything that was on limited stock notice from machine mart before because i'm frightened i might have to deal with the representative! cheeky

                  Hi Michael,

I have one of those Warco machines also making much noise,if you wonder
where all of the grinding dust goes you will find it in the motor.
When it eventually gives up take the cover off the side and you may find
the belt has no teeth ,some photo's in album "Workshop and machines".
A before and after photo virtually all the teeth have gone on the belt ,the 142 XL
is an odd size ,the after photo made some new pullies one tooth count on
each less, flanges both sides, modified the shafts to tapers uses now a 140XL belt ,runs quiet now .Apart from the problems a useful machine.

                  John

Well they have come! Instead of being lapped they have a but joint and a bit of fibreglass tape. They seem to be quieter and a bit longer so easier to fit (perhaps 305mm instead of 300?)

I know this is an old one but I think I might suspect what is at play here…

I recently came round to installing a new belt on a slightly different machine to neil's, the old one broke because of me basically, I scuffed it while it was off and it tore. But I noticed this arrow on the smooth side of the new P120 grit, Clarke belt…

                      belt1.jpg

Normally i'm quite sad and I do try to keep hold of all the manuals of the machines I get because you never know when it might be useful. It talks about in here that you need to keep the direction of the arrow inside the belt aligned with the direction of the arrow on the machine (if it's got one, but I guess you can watch and see which way round the blank drum turns without the belt).

                      belt2.jpg

It might not be the answer and we are talking about a different sized belt on a slightly different machine, and my machine has the direction labelled on it. But it does seem to describe the symptoms of a belt that would wear only on the lap joint from brand new.

You can change the direction of the belt by just turning round to face the opposite direction, not flip it over.

Ps, I also discovered the source of the loud noise, the disc wheel was loose so I tightened up the hex screw that secures it. It was basically rattling around because of this.

Hi Neil I have a similar Fox branded machine and had problem with the length of belt so I modified the rear idler position to accommodate a slightly longer belt of better quality sourced from BND abrasives. I also get belts for my 1 inch vanco belt linisher and my vertical linisher. That one currently has a 36 grit belt fitted for wood roughing. FINGERS!

I'm still on the first belt for MSC, they should last me a decade or two

@Michael, yes I am fitting them the right way round – the short-life scarf-jointed ones have a distinct lump at the join. The taped joint ones don't.

@Tractor, the belts are a >T-I-G-H-T< fit, but fine once you have them on.
