I have a box of these tips. They look very useful but they have a strange mounting arrangement that makes it difficult to use without the correct holder. The shank is an unequal oval shape. I thought about cutting off the large portion and just using the thin bit but that is not regular either.

      Overall about 40mm long.

I assume they are for boring small holes but am by no means certain.

Does anyone recognise them or know anything about such tips please?

They are made by P H Horn although a few other makers use the same teardrop style shank. Holders are available but not cheap

For hobby use use can make a simple holder with grub screws to push them against the side of a plain round hole.

I have another form of shank on some of mine and that is all I do.

          Thanks Jason,

Having now seen a holder, I might be tempted to make something up. I can CNC the hole if I am careful.

Looked on ebay – yes, they are not cheap!

Did mine about 20 years ago by drilling the large dia hole and using a small slot drill for the minor one and cleaned up by broaching with a broken tool. Use a grub screw to hold location.

I made a couple of holders for this type of insert years ago as I ended up with a box of used ones. All types of threading, boring and grooving tips.

From memory, I think i just drilled 2 holes for clearance and milled the location angle.

Another option is to drill the small hole, plug it back up with a cylinder of the same material and loctite. Then drill the larger one. Heat up to break the loctite.

A long-winded way would be to fabricate it from two halves and make the thin end pointed (vee rather than oval).

From a German forum, quite a bit on the Horn tool holders. I have hundreds that I purchased at auction and use them often. Easy to break if fed to deep, ask me how I know.

That price looks quite reasonable if one has a few tools to go with the holder.

                      That’s a useful link, thanks.

I can’t read German but the drawings tell me all the dimension I need!
