I am looking for a simple/basic wall clock that I can make to pass on to my children. It might seem a bit morbid but I’d like to give this to both of them as a memento from their parents.

My machining ability is reasonable having made the ME Jubilee clock some while ago, don’t think I’ve forgotten how I did it, however I no longer have my vertical mill so all machining will have to be done on a mini lathe or pillar drill. I would like to avoid main springs so this really just leaves weights.

Suggestions as to what might be suitable are most welcome, I’ve been looking around the web but keep coming up with kits and I’d rather build from scratch.

If you want ‘basic’ but also historically significant … Have a look at the Franklin

          Michael,

I don’t know where you find these gems.

They will thank you for not having to wind it every day. Hence the ME Jubilee is a good one but otherwise consider another electric type like the circular pendulum ones or at 30 day longcase. And on the subject of longcase bear in mind the ceiling height of modern house so perhaps a Vienna Regulator with some kind of electric remontoire would be an idea if you are up for designing it.

Something to consider is, who will fix it in 20 years time? Clock repairers are a vanishing breed.

Not having to wind each day is something to consider, I guess it becomes part of a ritual.

Trying to future proof a mechanism I hadn’t thought about so I’ll take that into account as well.

It’s probable that most wear in a conventional clock is in the going train between drive weights and escapement. A design that eliminates that should be more future proof. Would probably be electrical.

I think I’ll have to revise my ideas, perhaps an impulse pendulum is the way to go.

I believe this means that the pendulum is energised magnetically.

Not being into clocks I might have the wrong description.

                            I have found this clock:-

                            BATTERY DRIVEN ELECTRIC CLOCK

                            by JOHN WILDING

It could be what I’m looking for. However construction details seem to be difficult to find.

Duncan, this is the one that I think will be suitable as a starting point.

However getting hold of the construction book is proving very difficult. I have one enquiry ongoing but would appreciate the opportunity to purchase or borrow the book if possible.

My first clock was the weight driven 8-day wall clock described by John Wilding. I built two of them, some 30 years ago. Both are still working well. In fact I am listening to one of them ticking away as I type….

There’s a reason that verge and foliot clocks fell out of favour once Huygens showed how to use Galileo’s pendulum in a practical clock….

I think the OP had decided on Wilding’s battery clock, probably a good choice.  If there’s a version without contacts using say a hall sensor it would be even better as contacts wear out over time.

Verge & foliot clocks would IMHO be a really bad choice.  On one of the references quoted someone was asking “how do you determine the period of a V&F” – well that’s the problem, it depends very much on the air resistance seen by the foliot and the driving torque since the system doesn’t have a resonance as such.  It’s more of a “relaxation” oscillator like an R-C oscillator, which you wouldn’t expect to have a well defined frequency unless you have very accurate component values and stable voltage.  Since he wants to make two clocks as long-term “remembrance” pieces something where it’s easy to get two “identical” versions keeping time and staying in time for long periods with little maintenance is needed, especially bearing in mind that their owners may not have expertise and finding a qualified repairer in say 10 or 20 years might be difficult, even one who knows about pendulum clocks let alone V&F!
