VFD querie

Mid week i posted a question re my 3 phase motor and VFD and obtained some really useful advice,thanks to everyone.

While running up andtesting before fitting, and using the control panel on the VFD only sometimes when i run the potentiometer down it stays rotating at 4 or 5 even 7 Hz other times it goes back to zero and stops.

Is this normal using the controls on the VFD and will it stop when i connect through a on off switch?

Also any suggestions where i could get a fwd/Rev switch reasonably priced or could i make up a set from 3 push button switches?

You do not conventionally use the frequency as an on-off switch. That is why you have a run and a stop button on the keypad.

You can change the behaviour of the potentiometer (to turn it into a stop switch) with parameters 0.06 and 0.07.

When you install the switch on the control circuit, you need to set the parameter for the computer to obey that switch (i.e. one of the multifunctional input terminals, see parameters F.2.13-2.16).

Any industrial momentary push switch will work with the VFD. A 22mm panel hole is a very standard item. The challenge may be finding the place (and mangled English description) in the manual where you tell the computer if it is to use momentary or maintened switching. You will know if you have it wrong if you have to hold down the button to make it work.

I just have a start button, a stop button and a 1 pole 2 way toggle switch for fwd rev.  I used to have a fwd button and a rev button, but when pushing buttons blind I sometimes hit the rev when I wanted stop.

Some of the VFDs have the capability to program for such an action.

So if you hit reverse, it can ramp down to a stop and then ramp back up in the opposite direction.

On a lathe, threading to a shoulder, I think you can program for ‘instant’ reverse (fast, braked ramp down and direction change).

I think it is also possible to set to ramp down and then remain in ‘reverse standby’ until a second press is received.

The difficulty is the poor translation of the manuals. It can be fruitful to download a brand name manual just to understand the capabilities of a typical VFD and then try to map those capabilities onto the parameters of a more economic version.
