Thanks Jason, that’s really worth knowing and makes sense – glad I asked ‘cos I’m sure I wouldn’t have left enough on port faces etc.

If you were to do it in one heat would you lay some solder under the passage / block first or just feed in from the top?

I have never placed solder between two parts, and seldom place a piece on the work either. I just feed the rod in when the flux flows.

You could add a few very light punch marks to one of the mating surfaces, the small amount of raised metal around the marks will leave a tiny gap for the solder to flow into. A piece or two of soft iron wire can be twisted around the cylinder to hold the parts in place.

I don’t suppose you might have a part / drg of the valve &or ports easily to hand? – no probs if not, I can figure it from the other bits…

What I really wanted to ask is ‘method’ for painting the hollow base – whether to do the ‘inside’ faces of the separate elements before assembly, and then blow the outside over after it’s together, or, er, what? ..doesn’t look very easy to get at with a rattle can..

Painting is probably the bit I look forward to least..

Not until a couple of minutes ago. Have put it on a drawing and sent to you. Ask again if anything is not clear.

I primed the base parts both sides while unassembled, top coated the insides. Then assembled and top coated as an assembly.

The owner of the engine that I based my model on recently acquired a number of old Model Engineer mags, one of those had an interesting article in it. He has also seem a similar engine in the US as well as a separate cast base so it looks like a few castings were run off from the original patterns.
