I’ve just taxed my ratty old Suzuki … affectionately known as ‘The Skip’ [because it only gets used for runs to the Tip]

The process was delightfully simple in every respect … but at £385.00 the rate of expenditure was frightening.

When an electric car is plugged in to a commercial charging point I assume you have to have an account set up with the charging system and an app of course like with car parks. Does it ‘phone home’ to DVLA to confirm the car is taxed and insured? If not I bet it soon will be introduced.

I like it! Though I don’t suppose the DVLA staff don’t set the rates, and I expect many of them would agree with you!

The charging-points are supposed to have alternative payment methods and looking at a few, this seems to be happening now; but it was supposed to have been by law some years ago, not long after they started to appear.

I’m devastated, in January next year I’ll have to pay £20 VED for my 10 year old 2l SUV.

If it would be possible, we would be taxed on the air that we breathe!

Come to think of it, with Net Zero in mind; that might yet happen!

I felt VERY smug as I walked out of the local post office, I’m not sure you can call it a taxing experience ? It was free, I don’t need an MOT and the insurance was £99. But it is a 52 year old Landrover, with an old Perkins 4203 diesel in it. Noel.

Last year it cost me £710 for my Volvo, I think it is going up to £735 this year…

The wife’s Volvo was only £160 last month….

At least the insurance came down this year!

I have a Mokka 2016  which is £190 and a Citroen Picasso 2009 which is £190 both diesels. The Mokka is ULEZ Compliant. My neighbour has a Picasso diesel 2015 which is zero road tax,

I always used to drive Jags but the road tax now is just a no no on those.

Which Volvo is £710? The government is intent on forcing old cars off the roads even though the pollution caused to build electric cars is more than an old car will ever create.

Car driving is going to be the privilege of the rich soon.

My 2016 Prius was the last year of cars paying no tax, so far as l can see my car will still not pay any tax so over 9 years l have saved quite a lot in tax and fuel over 27,000 miles

Hi, the car I have now is zero road tax, which is 66 Reg., and is ULEZ compliant. which I’ve had now for nearly seven months, so I should get at least one year of not paying road tax. My last three cars were only £30.00 a year, but were not ULEZ, but were LEZ compliant.

                        Regards Nick.

                          Volvo V70 2.5T, band “L” tax.

This is ULEZ compliant, even at this level of emissions, don’t ask me how!

The Prius will be Band B, £20 next time you tax it assuming it is under 100g/km C2 on the documents. If it’s 100-110 g/km then £35.

Sadly, it doesn’t work like that.  An extra £405 is payable on top of the standard VED for the car annually for years 2-6 of the cars life.  Still, in some ways I’m fortunate to be in this position but it does rather go against the drive to encourage the take up of less atmosphere damaging cars.

We define social engineering as,  “Any act that influences a person to take an action that may or may not be in their best interest” (Christopher Hadnagy, Social Engineering: The Science of Human Hacking. 2nd ed. Hoboken, NJ: Wiley Publishing, 2018). We define it in very broad and general terms because we feel that social engineering is not always negative. It can also encompass how we communicate with our parents, therapists, children, spouses, and others.

We missed out buy a few months on having low emission, Zero VED,  (Euro 6 compliant) cars.

Instead, we are now paying ca £160 pa to drive about 5K a year.

                                          The price of being independent!

But, on the rare occasions when we need to to, we can venture into the outskirts of London without penalty.

The real pain in the wallet is the insurance, since we are both over 80. And it will get worse, year by year, on both fronts.

My Mitsubishi Shogun 3.2 is £415 at the minute but expect it will go up a tenner or so this year.   Sold the Merc at a massive loss as it was going to cost me £2500 to get the engine out and fix a major oil leak not including parts.. That is after I had just paid £1700 to fix the oil cooler leak.
