            My neighbour is not happy

DHSS have accessed his bank account without his permission

When he complained, he was told they can legally do this if fraud is suspected

No, Harry They found he was squeaky clean

Just someone passing incorrect DHSS which prompted the investigation

He was more shocked than anything else aver what happened as he believed bank accounts and your details were confidential. Not to the Goverment departments it seems.

                bill

Nor the Police otherwise drug dealers would be very happy.

If you take money from any government department then you basically give up the right to privacy

The DHSS no longer exists it was replaced by the Department of Social Security in 1988 which was superseded by the Department of Work and Pensions, i.e. DWP in 2001. Do keep up!

If they have wanted, the powers that be have had access since about 2000 and maybe much earlier.

Was this some sort of scam?

The Department of Health and Social Security hasn't existed since 1988, and it's successor (the Department of Social Security) became the Department of Work and Pensions twenty years ago.

It's true the DWP and HRMC have powers to access bank accounts but they wouldn't call themselves the DHSS. A con man fishing for bank account information might!

If you read the paypal and ebay T&C then if you sign up you give them permission to deduct any amount and any time from your credit or debit card.

                          THAT is criminal!

Did these draconian powers come into being because of our membership of the EU where all member states were required to have parallel systems in place ? Dave W

Challenge the authority of HMRC at the airport when they politely ask to search your suitcase. Refuse and send your taxi away.

Tell the VAT inspector to come back later if he wants to see your bank account.

                                                Good luck with those 😂

I am reminded of all the posturing and legal advice relating to the supply of cadmium bearing silver solder. I opened a war chest for all the financial contributions to fight Brussels. It remains empty.

No. ..they came into being with the need to investigate fraud, deception, and evasion of dues centuries ago – er, I believe the first 'Customs / Assize' powers enshrined as law have a mediaeval origin.

I'm somewhat surprised that educated men are so outraged that a public body charged with accounting for taxpayers money should have the necessary powers to investigate abuses..

In 2019-20, I believe benefits fraud administered by DWP amounted to around £2 billion..

I wouldn't mind seeing a small part of that spent on something socially beneficial near me..
