I was recently sent an email from Workshop Heaven tools, which contained this link to a very interesting video about a man who puts together handmade scissors in Sheffield – hence the name 'The Putter'.

(Must admit I thought it was going to be about golf clubs )

Ah, that name is for shortened somewhat.

The proper Sheffield name for a scissor assembler was a scissor putter togetherer. Such a wonderfully descriptive term.

We can start a new thread all about job titles etc.

My grandad was a colliery Dateler for example.

In the 1891 Census, my paternal grandfather aged 15 was record as Blacksmith. They were tough in those days cheeky

Ten years later the 1901 Census shows him as Agricultural Engineer. When I checked for this jump in his status, it transpires he may well have remained as a Blacksmith. He died while my father was only six, so I didn't get a chance to ask.

Some of these are interesting …

The School Mistress was not mad merely certificated – an engine was any machinery and the driver was merely an operator – Clogs were still readily available during my childhood in NW England for operatives in cotton mills

A brief bit about the company HERE, good to see them getting back on their feet again following Nick's sad death.

I did go round the works on their final day, and purchased a few pairs, before the later rescue package was put together.

I've still got some, made to measure, most comfortable footwear I've got. Made by Phil Howard in Stockport

                      NW clogs

not stunningly expensive when you think they can be repaired endlessly unlike modern shoes

… and kids like me in primary and the first few months of secondary school. I was banned from the slides on the frozen playground. The irons apparently tearing up the nice smooth surface the older kids had produced.

Clogs were lovely and warm, and could make sparks by kicking the concrete a glancing blow.

The co-op was always busy in the clog-repair shop.

Someone in the toolroom was not impressed when he caught me winding a 0-1 around by gripping the thimble in my fist – "… and stop swinging it around like a clog iron", he yelled.

Another pass-time, although I never saw one was 'clug feytin o'rt moss'.
