Fitting moving steadies

Hi,

I am a beginner, please go easy on me. Today i bought my 1st lathe, a small 2nd hand clarke CL300M with lots of accessories. It didnt come with a manual (i downloaded one), but i cannot find how to fit the moving steadies that come with the lathe.

Can anyone help please ?

Hi Allison, welcome to the forum.

I'm afraid I have no knowledge of your lathe but on my Warco machine the travelling steady attaches to the top of the saddle to the left of the topslide. The attachment is by 2 bolts, one to the front and one at the back. The necessary holes have screw in blanks fitted.

Hopefully this may give you a clue where to look or someone with real info will be along shortly.

if you have downloaded the Clarke manual, on page 26 there is a photo that shows the position of the moving steady on the saddle to the left of the cross slide (when viewed as if using the lathe)

If you look at the left side of the saddle, you will se the two threaded holes (they may be filled with swarf! Attachment is by two M6 bolts (they are M6 on my minilathe – may be different thread sizes on other clones)

Thank you Nic and Martin, I have now got the travelling steady fitted and working. The 2 fixing points had small grub screws in and were covered in muck. I carefully removed the grub screws, cleaned the slide and fitted the steady with new machine screws. All i have to do now is when i need to use the steady is to remove the grub screws, mount the steady and fasten the machine screws.

I used mine the other day when extending a leadscrew thread. The screws are to stop the threads filling up with muck. I found a secondary use for the rear hole, a lock for the rear of the saddle.
