        Looking at the motion of the rectilinear engine, there appears to be two instances when the engine could stall. They are when the vertical slide is at the top or bottom of its stroke and the horizontal slide is at mid point causing the connecting rod to be vertical. This configuration implies that the motion will lock. How is this overcome, does it rely on the momentum of the fly wheel to overcome it.

          No different to any other engine at TDC or BDC, yes the flywheel will carry it over.
