In previous posts I posted about the new to me Myford Super 7 I purchased. It was in Colorado USA but was from a retired British Air Colonel who was living in Colorado at the time of his untimely demise. A neighbor friend of the Colonel sold it to me.

With the lathe, all of its tooling came with it including some collets I have never seen. I "think" they are British in origin therefore my question here. They fit a #2 MT sleeve that fits the headstock and have a fine threaded end to pull them tight into the sleeve. I don't have the collet closing tube and that is what I would like to make.

I can't seem to upload pictures of one the collets so my problem is two fold! What are the collets and how to upload!

      thanks

          Jerry,

Myfords "own" collets had a special front end, with a rebate machined around the edge, this fitted into a collet closing nut which screwed onto the end of the spindle, so the collet was pushed into the taper rather than drawn into it from the other end. This left the hole in the spindle clear so thin bar could pass through it, allowing longer workpieces to be accommodated.

If your collets have an internal thread at the back end, then they are not "Myford Pattern", but more likely ordinary MT2 draw collets. Myford collets didn't need the internal thread of course.

Check the front end, if it is plain then not Myford, just an ordinary draw collet, which will of course work in the Myford spindle taper but will need a drawbar to pull it in from the left-hand end.

The collet internal thread in UK would likely be 3/8" Whitworth if Imperial or M10 if Metric.

Briefly, the drawbar needs to be about 11" long, with 5/8" length threaded at one end to screw into the collet, and 1½" threaded at the other for a tightening nut plus a loose collar (about 3/4" – 1"  to centralise it in the end of the spindle.

Of course, when you produce a picture of your collet then it may be completely different!! Sods Law!

To upload pictures you first need to create a photo album here, load the pictures into that, and from there into your posting. Check out the home page when you are logged in, you'll find the links in the green bar at the very top "Albums".

I'll try and post pics of a Myford and an ordinary MT2 collet later.

Jerry, when it comes to loading a photo, you'll probably have to down size, 640 x 480 is a good size, but you probably know that, others my not. Ian S C

              Jerry,

This is unlikely to help, as I couldn't find any plain 2MT collets, must have given them away when I moved to ER type for the small mill.

However, this is a Myford collet:

and the drawbar I used for plain collets on the Super 7, as described above – quickly made from a bit of tube with a piece of threaded rod brazed into each end and a collar turned from round bar. Not pretty but worked well.
