I would ask for a bit of help here. I bought this by accident (don't ask, long story) and I am perplexed as to what it is and how to use it. It is some sort of tapping chuck – it says M4-M12 on it.

How do you use it? I realise I need to get a JT6 to Morse Taper adapter:

The chuck is tightened by the front collar holds and the tap shank. The square of the tap shank fits into what may be described as a vice, tightened by the allen key socket, marked "open", and stops the tap rotating in the chuck. The "vice" is self centreing. I have one of these devices and it works well. particularly on the larger taps, just make sure that the morse taper is a good fit in the tailstock. I have not found it necessary to use the C spanner, hand tight seems to be sufficient.

          Regards

          John

The Allen screw adjustment grips the square part of the shank on a tap and the chuck part holds the tap true. It is more secure than simply holding a tap in a three jaw chuck especially with larger sizes but a bar can be screwed into mine to help resist rotation.

The chuck only needs to be tight enough to hold the tap shank true whilst the square gets a grip. The square gripper is floating, not self centreing as such but so long as the shank is true it will come on centre.

That looks to be a solid body, direct drive, version. I personally would arrange it with some sort of fast drive release device rather than having it rigid in the machine. That way if the tap does start to bind you can release the drive and let things spin whilst you shut down in orderly fashion to clear the jam. Jammed tap + direct drive = snap. A carrier with a short sliding movement and pin drive so it releases when you draw back ought to do. As would a simple spring release friction clutch but getting sufficient drive for larger taps may be a problem. Depending on the machine direct drive tends to be rather fast too. Best to use proper machine taps too.

I'm spoilt in having a set of Pollard tapping heads (all but the very smallest) about the place. Internal reduction gear with automatic forward and reverse clutches so the moment you release pressure in either direction drive is lost. Mr Pollards tap holder is similar to the one shown but the chuck part is a simple three sprung jaws and screw down cone affair of the sort normally found on an ordinary turn the handle "eggbeater" drill.

For better or worse I have one of the "cheap ones" then. Which, from the instructions furnished by the contributors above, looks like it is a terrific leap forward for me. Much better than just sticking the tap in the chuck on the drill press!

It does indeed have a tapping for a bar so that is good but what I really need is a revolving centre between the JT6 taper of the chuck I have and an MT2 taper. I am going to explore the various avenues but if anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them.

                    Graham.

Do you mean something like this from ArcEuroTrade **here**?

Dias, terrific, thank you. Exactly something like that!.

If I cannot get exactly the right JT6 taper is there a way of making it fit?

Sorry for the dumb questions but I am right out of my comfort zone now

                          Hello Graham, good evening.

For what I could see in ArcEuroTrade's site they only have this size.
I tried a search with Google (using the name given to it by ArcEuroTrade) and found nothing interesting. Perhaps you have to machine the B16 taper to JT6. I don't have any JT6 taper to be able to compare sizes. However seeing images in the WWW I find apparently the JT6 is much smaller than B16. Both having centres in both extremes I think it's not a difficult task to transform from B16 to J6.
