Hi having had a few crunches mainly caused by Dixon toolpost not locking I decided to make rear toolpost for parting off to ensure a more solid hold on the part off blade. I got a casting from another member on here for the base and then I have designed a top to hold the blade solidly.

Looks good. I have one of Geoff's castings too. Got as far as machining the base but got stuck with the top turret by buying at great expense a foot of square bar that was 2" instead of the required 1.5" or so. So have been procrastinating on whittling the lump down to size. I bought a T section parting blade from Eccentric Engineering, a nice one about 2mm wide by 13mm deep. Plan to make the turret to mount the blade directly. Keep us posted on how you go.

Got a little closer to finishing. Machined the top pieces to line up with casting and after making a 15 degree cutter cut the dovetail to clamp the tool blade.

I'd be very interested to hear how you made the cutter, the photo is a bit unclear but I assume you have reground an endmill to suit?

                  Hi finished it at last.

Philip I used a 8mm slot drill ground one flute off and then ground the other flute at 15 degrees as you would a standard flute but set at an angle.

A few more pictures I oil blacked the steel parts and as I had bought a new dedicated Iscar part off blade you have to take into consideration the centre height of the finished tool.

just tied it out before painting etc.

you can also mount the blade on the right hand side if you are using a fixed steady for instance to part off a long bar.

Pretty good job for an 80-year-old lathe! Well done.

What make/model is the parting blade and insert? I might have to join the modern world and get one.
