      Hi,

      I'm looking for a bit of advice regarding a 3 1/2" Gauge P V Baker 0-6-0 locomotive.

On the locomotive which I have recently bought, the left front liner covers on the front of the cylinders are only held by one screw. The front covers lie above the front cylinder cover. I have attached a few photographs to make it easier to visualise what's going on, along with a picture of the cover and screw.

Anyway, when I tested the chassis on air the other day, the front liner cover on one side blew off.

      Any advice will be appreciated.

      Many thanks.

P.S. I have uploaded three images which can be seen in the 'Latest images' section.

It is the end cap of the cylinder valve. depending on design details this should only be seeing exhaust pressure and be connected to the open air via the smallish hole in the exhaust up the chimney. Under slow movement or air for testing the pressure wouldn't have been much and a push fit with a holding screw would have held.
Was it sold as running or just 'finished and tested'?

Anyway it needs more screws, and perhaps a seal if not a tight fit.

edit: don't forget the other end as well as the other side.

            Hi Ed,

Thank you for your comments. It all makes sense now. I think what I have done is to run compressed air through the exhaust rather than the steam manifold and hence the reason the end cap blew off. It's a very tight fit to get the cap seated back again. I hope I won't need to remove the cylinder!

The locomotive was sold as a pretty much complete locomotive – air running chassis, all cab work acompleted and a certificated belpaire boiler (non standard for a P V Baker – I think).

Anyway, I've had to remove the platework and boiler, to clean and test.

I try and upload a few pictures tomorrow. Quite an impressive tank engine in 3 1/2" Gauge.

            Many thanks,

            Mark
