Noel, I do sometimes use a Sif type filler rod particularly if the item is going to get heated like the end plate on a hot air engines displacer cylinder or a furnace to surround it. Otherwise I have a good stock of the good stuff as well as some 55% so silver solder.

Provided the parts are not too thick I can just about get the Sif to melt with propane alone. I suppos eit is a toss up between the cost of silver solder and having to buy another torch, tank deposit and oxy bottles. I do have one of the carbon arc type torches that came with the old buzz box and have also used that a couple of times for more bulkier items or where I want a bigger fillet, my Uncle was a cycle frame builder and did some loverly smooth fillet brazed frames and had a gas fluxer feeding into the torch supply.

Hydrochloric for me to in its dilute form sold as brick cleaner, not only will it remove flux residue it also takes of any black scakle from steel. Same part after 20mins soak. That is a slight copper coating a sthe pickle is well used and not rust.
