Unusual Go-No Go Tool?

Hi all,

This little item was in the bottom of a crate of tooling we just got, I think it is incomplete but would love to know its specific use? Turning the end moves the pointer along the scale marked "Micrographs"

I wonder if ‘Micrographs’ might be the manufacturer, rather than the scale.

It is obviously made to fit in a coat pocket along with pens. What happens at the buisiness end when the scale is moved?

Nothing seems to happe when the end cap is turned, as I said it looks incomplete?

The scale on it is non-linear (perhaps logarithmic), so that eliminates a vast amount of possible applications and opens up other possibilities.

Almost looks like some sort of sighting/viewing device on top. Look through the small hole and align something within the rectangular part?

I wonder if the scale is logarithmic, it is clearly not a linear scale but I wonder if it is a sine/cosine/tangent curve. Is there a spring in the tool?

If you add 60 to each scale point you get close to a logarithmic progression. The deviation may be due to small errors in the numbers for the scale due to it being measured from a photo.

No spring that i can see but there does appear to be a kind of small window by the clip and as one winds the end knob a sloping point moves back and forth in the window. window is quite murky and discolored so not easy to see.

The non-linear scale implies the gauge is for measuring intensity rather than a physical dimension, and the peep hole and squared top suggest a simple optical assembly is missing.

As the instrument is a pocket tool, it's used by someone walking about. The peep hole suggests she eyeballs the target. Sound and light, hence heat, are perceived by humans on a logarithmic scale. I think it's for judging the temperature of a furnace or flame for making glass, normalising steel, welding, or melting without boiling etc. Possibly confirming a lighting system is performing to specification.

Any sign of anything mechanical missing at the top? If it's a visual intensity gauge I'd expect the control wheel to adjust an aperture between the peep hole and the lens carrier, now lost.

I was speculating that the square held the base of a tool that was snapped into place into your 'aperture'. Something like fixed and sprung divider arms as a quick sizing of some tiny items for consistency…
The attachment would be kept in a separate pouch.
But since evidently the arms are easily bent it's an odd choice of design for any real accuracy.

Michael i think you underestimate yourself. I have the impression that you are highly regarded on this forum. At least i look up to you. I did the item to death & came up with nothing. I really do hope you find what it is.

My Uncle worked at a nuclear plant in Cumbria some years ago & had a similar device , which he always kept in his top pocket. It was to make sure that any area he entered was not radio-active. I followed that path & found nothing. Hope you do better.

That would be a quartz fibre dosimetry, getting to be old hat when I was regularly visiting Sellafield, and that's a fair few years back. It's all done electronically now. I only had one scary moment, alarm went off continuous rather than the occasional beep. Turned out the battery was nearly flat. I don't glow in the dark
