I bought this miller as an vertical miller.I realised that it had been converted and decided to restore it as near as I could to it,s original condition.I have done the pillar bearings and the mandrel,I have the steel for the pulleys 6" 5" 4"*1 1/8' it would originally have been a flat belt drive and I wish it to look authentic.I have thought of machining these to also take a multi v belt to look as if they have been converted but make it a more useable machine .I would like to here your thoughts on not just leaving them as crowned pulleys.

          Francis,

You might get away with a PolyVee on just the drive pulley … treating it as "flat" on the machine.

This sounds outrageous, but it's what they do on Tumble Dryers these days.

          .

P.S. … it appears that your machine is rare; I would certainly make every effort to avoid modifying any of the original parts.

            Francis,

On Sunday, I saw the proof of this concept

Have a look at the drive on this …

It belongs to Denis, one of the volunteers at Papplewick Pumping Station, and he assures me that it works fine.

Crowned flat-belt pulley on the engine; Timing belt pulley on the 2kW generator.

              Michael.

sorry for not responding sooner but I have not been able to reply to any posts.

Thank you for the information. The milling machine is a small horizontal stub miller with a knee. The previous owner had cut off the pillar bearing housings, milled what remained flat and then built up two columns to make it into a vertical millar.I decided to rebuild it as it was originally .I obtained the original bearing housings from the previous owner so that I had a pattern to work from.Unfortunately I had to make the new housings 5/8" higher to allow for fixing below the bearings, this made them circular at the top with tapered sides from centre height. I have fitted two taper roller bearings to both housings and disguised them with threaded covers.I aligned the bearing housings with the use of a laser centre finder mounted square on the table.I marked the front one and then removed it without disturbing the laser, and marked the rear one.The pulleys assuming they would be the same size as the lathe pulleys of which there is a drawing are 1" 1/8"wide so the poly v belt would sit in the middle as if I had upgraded the original. You are right,It is a rare machine and according to Tony Griffiths it was possibly the only one made .That is why I want it to look original, but also usable.Thank you again for your input

                Frank,

You're very welcome; and your restoration job sounds like a great project.

Assuming that posting is no longer a problem, could you kindly put a few [before and after] pictures in an album.

                Thanks

                MichaelG.
