      Edit: __ but, if you were so inclined, I suppose it could be done with ‘flat’ gearing anyway … no need for a concentric stack.

      It was me that mentioned co-axial ratchet wheels, and in the same sentence referred to 'the pawl'. You wouldn't have more than one solenoid for one pawl?

          I was once told , that to ensure that the armature releases from the Electromagnet, the magnetic circuit should not be complete, having a very thin shim of copper or brass between the armature and "lever"

          Possibly Aluminium foil would serve the purpose.
