…It can help to mark your nut so that you know which way to tilt them when removing.

more expensive ones come with nut marked:

I mark cheap Chinese ones like so:

      It does help indeed!

The low spot – side to apply pressure? seems to correspond to the collet size on this example.
I’ll try it when the collets arrive. If it’s still difficult I may have a go at turning a collet remover from some Nylon Rod.

I wouldn’t count on Chinese to apply text always in the same position…

“Collet remover” will make little difference if you try removing collet in a wrong position.

It’s the eccentric lip inside that has to be correctly  aligned.
picture below shows inside of the nut as it relates to the sketch:

Oh, I fully agree. That’s why I said “This Example”. I just need to remember. I may look at some of my other collet chucks. I doubt, as you’ve indicated, there’s any consistency, but you never know … 🤣 Yes, I’m aware of the lip, or I would have had trouble loading the larger ones.

The solution is the nut style that uses the spanner to remove the collet out as it undoes.

Just and update and great thank you Neil for pointing me towards ER MS collet nuts.
              Absolutely delighted with them!

Easy to use, better for high RPM and (I am personally convinced) better for concentricity.

I use ER11 8mm adapters, not as a substitute for proper 8mm collets, but for jobs where ER collets are adequate,

and the only thing that bothered me about them (until now) was the isssue raised in this thread.

MS nuts solve the problem for me!

When I made My Stepperhead lathe I  found that instead of making the nut with an eccentric lip to enable an ER collet removal, it was much easier to add two hardened discs spaced at 120 degrees to each other so that the discs performed the same operation as the eccentric lip.  It is also much easier to insert  or remove the collet. The hardened discs seem to deal quite well with the rough edges of the collet groove. The collet  is just placed in position by putting  the collet groove over the discs first then place the tapered front face of the collet in the collet nut.
